Understanding farmers’ intention to perform result-based agri-environmental schemes for the improved provision of biodiversity and soil quality
This article investigates the influence of socio-psychological factors on farmers’ intention to perform result-based agri-environmental schemes for the improved provision of biodiversity and soil quality. We present a Structural Equation Model, which uses an extended Technology Acceptance Model as a theoretical basis for better understanding farmers’ decision-making. Results from a survey of 235 Austrian farmers show that behavioural factors such…
Farmers' perceived financial and non-financial costs of their biodiversity measures – Exploring viewpoints with Q-methodology
Farmers’ willingness to continue participation in their agri-environmental program and maintain biodiversity measures in the long term is shaped by the nature of costs they perceive during implementation. Research emphasizes the need to account for both financial and non-financial costs, but holistic assessments which both put these costs into relation and account for farmers’ varied perceptions remain lacking. To capture the plurality of perceiv…
Using a perception matrix to elicit farmers‘ perceptions towards stakeholders in the context of biodiversity-friendly farming
Farmers' pro-environmental action is substantially influenced by various stakeholders from their business and social environment. Recent studies recommend actively involving influential stakeholders in agri-environmental initiatives, information or media campaigns. While it has been argued that farmers' perceptions towards these stakeholders can help inform effective involvement, comprehensive assessments of these perceptions remain scarce, parti…
A fuzzy cognitive mapping approach for the assessment of public-goods governance in agricultural landscapes
In Europe, growing concerns about the environmental impacts of agriculture have stimulated the development of more efficient governance options to be included in, or to complement, current agri-environmental policies. However, a significant hurdle for the implementation of enhanced policy tools is the difficult adaptation of promising approaches, such as collective contracts and private-based payments for environmental services, to the locally sp…
Provision of public goods by agriculture and forestry
The provision of public goods by agriculture and forestry has taken increasing importance in the policy debate. The objective of this editorial is to set the scene for the special issue, to provide a summary of the main messages from the papers therein, highlight the most relevant lessons learnt for policy and generate insights for future research. The results highlight that there is a need to investigate further both the micro-mechanisms of deci…
Do improved pollination services outweigh farm-economic disadvantages of working in small-structured agricultural landscapes? – Development and application of a bio-economic model
The Environmental Behaviour of Farmers – Capturing the Diversity of Perspectives with a Q Methodological Approach
Agricultural landscapes, ecosystem services and regional competitiveness—Assessing drivers and mechanisms in nine European case study areas
Agricultural landscapes affect regional development and competitiveness in a way far beyond the production of agricultural commodities. However, comprehensive assessments of the relevant cause-effects between agricultural landscape and regional competitiveness are complex and they require a range of ecological, economic and social aspects to be considered. This study proposes an stakeholder-based ‘Analytic Network Process’ applied in nine Europea…
A conceptual model to integrate the regional context in landscape policy, management and contribution to rural development
Agri-environmental policies and planning influence agricultural landscape management, and thus the capacity to deliver landscape services and to contribute to rural viability. Numerous models and frameworks have been developed to improve comprehension of the mechanisms and interrelationships between policies, landscape and socio-economic values and benefits. As social-ecological systems, landscapes are closely depending from the socio-institution…
Regional heterogeneity and spatial interdependence as determinants of the cultivation of an emerging alternative crop
The dynamic effects of government-supported farm-investment activities on structural change in Austrian agriculture
Modelling Individual Farm Behaviour and Landscape Appearance
We develop a farm- and plot-specific land-use model, which allows to examine the influence of changing socio-economic conditions on agricultural landscapes. The outstanding feature of our model is that we directly consider the knowledge of local farmers and agrarian experts for the specification of the farm-specific adaptation process. Furthermore, we visualise changes in landscape appearance by photo manipulation. The study takes place in three …
European agricultural landscapes, common agricultural policy and ecosystem services
Farming for a Better Climate (FarmClim) . Design of an Inter- and Transdisciplinary Research Project Aiming to Address the “Science-Policy Gap”
FarmClim aims at contributing to a more considerate use of nitrogen in Austrian agriculture. The transdisciplinary research project attempts to tackle the “science-policy gap” by using a participatory approach, that is, stakeholders influence the research process as much as the scientists strive for the implementation of their ideas. This paper describes the project design and communication processes. Full integration of practice partners adds to…
Accounting for farmers’ production responses to environmental restrictions within landscape planning
