Perceptions and treatment seeking for abnormal uterine bleeding among women of reproductive age group in rural North India
Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), affecting 3–30% of women of reproductive age, can lead to serious physical complications such as anaemia and infertility, and also negatively impacts mental well-being, social participation, and economic productivity. Despite this, treatment-seeking remains low due to poor health literacy, cultural taboos, limited autonomy in decision-making, and inadequate access to female healthcare providers. The qualitative st…
Assessment of targeted intervention programs on STI symptoms among Hijra and transgender in India
We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a Targeted Intervention (TI) program on Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) symptoms among Hijra and Transgender (H/TG) persons in India. We analyzed the H/TG data from the national Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveillance (IBBS) Survey for the years 2014-2015. The IBBS was a cross-sectional survey of 4,966 H/TG. Descriptive analysis was employed to delineate the socio-demographic profile of H/T…
Risk of secondhand smoke exposure and severity of Covid-19 infection
Introduction: Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is an established causal risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic lung disease. Numerous studies have evaluated the role of tobacco in COVID-19 infection, severity, and mortality but missed the opportunity to assess the role of SHS. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine whether SHS is an independent risk factor for COVID-19 infection, severity, mortality, and other co-mor…
Maternal health care access among migrant women labourers in the selected brick kilns of district Faridabad, Haryana
A typical migrant woman labourer in the brick kiln was an illiterate, had migrated from poor states, belonged to a socially disadvantaged community and worked long hours, and had been doing so for many years. This study has identified migrant women working in brick kilns as a vulnerable population subgroup in terms of maternal health utilization. To achieve universal health care it is important to understand the needs of all population subgroups …
Decadal transition of adult mortality pattern at Ballabgarh HDSS
Mortality surveillance using verbal autopsy tool revealed a transition in cause specific deaths from respiratory diseases to cardiovascular diseases over the decade. The apparent epidemiological transition in the community demands reorientation of healthcare priorities
Cause of death during 2009–2012, using a probabilistic model (InterVA-4)
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to estimate the age and cause-specific mortality in Ballabgarh Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) site for the years 2009 to 2012, using a probabilistic model (InterVA-4). METHODS: All Deaths in Ballabgarh HDSS from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2012, were included in the study. InterVA-4 model (version 4.02) was used for assigning cause of death (COD). Data from the verbal autopsy (VA) tool w…
Cause-specific childhood mortality in Africa and Asia
BACKGROUND: Childhood mortality, particularly in the first 5 years of life, is a major global concern and the target of Millennium Development Goal 4. Although the majority of childhood deaths occur in Africa and Asia, these are also the regions where such deaths are least likely to be registered. The INDEPTH Network works to alleviate this problem by collating detailed individual data from defined Health and Demographic Surveillance sites. By re…
Mortality from external causes in Africa and Asia
BACKGROUND: Mortality from external causes, of all kinds, is an important component of overall mortality on a global basis. However, these deaths, like others in Africa and Asia, are often not counted or documented on an individual basis. Overviews of the state of external cause mortality in Africa and Asia are therefore based on uncertain information. The INDEPTH Network maintains longitudinal surveillance, including cause of death, at populatio…
Adult non-communicable disease mortality in Africa and Asia
BACKGROUND: Mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is a major global issue, as other categories of mortality have diminished and life expectancy has increased. The World Health Organization's Member States have called for a 25% reduction in premature NCD mortality by 2025, which can only be achieved by substantial reductions in risk factors and improvements in the management of chronic conditions. A high burden of NCD mortality among muc…
Malaria mortality in Africa and Asia
BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to be a major cause of infectious disease mortality in tropical regions. However, deaths from malaria are most often not individually documented, and as a result overall understanding of malaria epidemiology is inadequate. INDEPTH Network members maintain population surveillance in Health and Demographic Surveillance System sites across Africa and Asia, in which individual deaths are followed up with verbal autopsies…
Adult mortality surveillance by routine health workers using a short verbal autopsy tool in rural north India
BACKGROUND: Most of the standard verbal autopsy tools are long and are used in a research setting. This study aims to compare a short verbal autopsy (VA) tool developed at Ballabgarh, India to be used by health workers for routine mortality surveillance with a standard tool. METHODS: A short VA tool was developed which was used by health workers during their routine house visits while a standard International Network of Field Sites with continuou…
Migrating husbands and changing cardiovascular risk factors in the wife
OBJECTIVE: The authors studied the influence of migration of husband on cardiovascular risk factors in Asian Indian women. METHODS: Population-based studies in women aged 35-70 years were performed in four urban and five rural locations. 4608 (rural 2604 and urban 2004) of the targeted 8000 (57%) were enrolled. Demographic details, lifestyle factors, anthropometry, fasting glucose and cholesterol were measured. Multivariate logistic and quadratic…
P2-475 HIV risk behaviour and prevalence of self reported sexually transmitted diseases among men who have sex with men, registered with selected non-governmental organisations in Delhi, India
Introduction In India HIV/AIDS rates are almost stable in high risk groups except among Men who have Sex with Men (MSMs). There are scarce data available on MSMs. The objective of this study was to assess knowledge, practices and risk behaviours and self-reported STIs among MSMs. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in three non-governmental organisations working with MSM in Delhi. 250 MSMs were interviewed over a period of one year. Th…
