Considerations for study design and analysis for ethically and culturally safe DNA methylation research in Aotearoa New Zealand
Epigenetic research, particularly DNA methylation (DNAm), holds significant potential for improving cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction, yet its application must be guided by ethical and culturally responsive considerations. This paper examines the integration of a values-based framework to ensure the culturally safe conduct of DNAm research within the Multi-Ethnic New Zealand Study of Acute Coronary Syndromes (MENZACS) cohort. Grounded …
Scoping review of the use of multimorbidity variables in cardiovascular disease risk prediction
Few studies have assessed the impact of incorporating multimorbidity indices in primary and secondary prevention cohorts. Future research is needed to evaluate the incremental value of multimorbidity indices in cardiovascular disease risk prediction models to inform risk stratification and management strategies in people with multimorbidity
Smoking data quality of primary care practices in comparison with smoking data from the New Zealand Māori and Pacific abdominal aortic aneurysm screening programme
PCP smoking data quality compared with the AAA data is consistent with international findings. PCP data captured fewer current and ex-smokers, suggesting ongoing improvement is important. Intervention programmes based on smoking status should consider complementary mechanisms to ensure eligible individuals are not missed from programme invitation
Cultural context in New Zealand
We examined the importance of understanding and incorporating cultural context within Aotearoa/New Zealand when engaging in clinical research and practice. This paper reports on the qualitative findings of a mixed methods study aimed at determining what effect a cardiac risk reduction exercise and lifestyle management programme, embedded within a kaupapa Māori methodological approach, had on Māori participants. This methodology saw participants a…
How do cardiovascular risk prediction equations developed among 30–74 year olds perform in older age groups? A validation study in 125 000 people aged 75–89 years
BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction equations are being used to guide risk management among increasingly older individuals. We examined the performance of recent equations, derived from a 2006 cohort including almost all New Zealanders aged 30-74 years, among older people. METHODS: All New Zealanders aged 75-89 years in contact with state-funded health services in 2006 without prior CVD or heart failure and with complete pred…
The effect of a 12-week exercise and lifestyle management programme on cardiac risk reduction
Introduction: Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of premature death and disability for all New Zealanders. Māori, the Indigenous people of New Zealand, are disproportionately affected. The New Zealand Māori Health Strategy recognises that “health and wellbeing are influenced and affected by the ‘collective’ ... and the importance of working with people in their social contexts, not just with their physical symptoms” (Ministry of Hea…
