    Public participation in televised debate programmes was a major feature of the 2007 presidential election campaign and sparked controversy as to the value of the format. Many journalists of the written press and intellectual experts were highly critical, dubbing it a ‘false’ democracy, populist in nature.     This article focuses on public participation in televised debates broadcast during the French presidential election campaign, between January and March 2007, examining women's access to public political debate and their legitimacy as representatives or accredited spokespersons.
