  • Mediating Factors for the Relationship between Stress and Work Ability over Time in Young Adults

Open Access•A van Schaaijk, Adnan Noor Baloch et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Stress can affect work ability. The aim of this study was to identify how this pathway is mediated over time in young adults. Participants of the Work Ability in Young Adults cohort were selected. A theoretical framework was built, which lead to a statistical model. Selected dimensions of mediators were recovery, work demands affecting private life, feelings of control over private life, and physical activity in leisure time. A quadruple serial m…

  • Older assistant nurses’ motivation for a full or extended working life

    Open Access•Kristina Gyllensten, Kerstin Wentz et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 29

The aim of this study was to explore older workers’ motivation for a full or extended working life. With particular focus on assistant nurses aged 55–64 years, working in the elderly care sector. Focus group interviews were conducted with five different groups of assistant nurses. Inductive thematic analysis was used to analyse the interviews and five main themes were developed from the data: ‘Organisational issues’, ‘Health-related problems’, ‘P…

  • Opportunities for recovery at work and excellent work ability - a cross-sectional population study among young workers

Open Access•Maria Boström, Judith K Sluiter et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

For young men, having varied work can contribute to excellent work ability. In addition, for men with high work demands, the possibility of deciding when to perform a work task may be favourable for excellent work ability. For young women with high work demands, the possibility of deciding one's working hours can contribute to excellent work ability. Employers could use these opportunities for recovery in promoting work ability among young worker…

  • Leisure time computer use and overweight development in young adults – a prospective study

Open Access•Sara Thomée, Lauren Lissner et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

We have identified a new risk group for overweight development: young adult female computer gamers. Leisure time computer gaming was a prospective risk factor for overweight in women even after adjusting for demographic and lifestyle factors, but not in men. There were no clear prospective associations between computer use for emailing/chatting and overweight in either sex

  • Changes in work situation and work ability in young female and male workers. A prospective cohort study

Open Access•Maria Boström, Judith K Sluiter et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Decreased job control and increased negative influence of job demands on private life over time seem to be the most important work factors associated with reduced work ability among young workers of both sexes. Increased social support at work, increased job control, and decreased negative influence of job demands on private life were also found to be the main work factors associated with improved work ability, although with possible gender diffe…

  • Mobile phone use and stress, sleep disturbances, and symptoms of depression among young adults - a prospective cohort study

Open Access•Sara Thomée, Annika Härenstam et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

High frequency of mobile phone use at baseline was a risk factor for mental health outcomes at 1-year follow-up among the young adults. The risk for reporting mental health symptoms at follow-up was greatest among those who had perceived accessibility via mobile phones to be stressful. Public health prevention strategies focusing on attitudes could include information and advice, helping young adults to set limits for their own and others' access…

  • The work ability index and single-item question

Open Access•Linda Åhlström, Anna Grimby‐Ekman et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of Work,…•2010

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the association between the work ability index (WAI) and the single-item question on work ability among women working in human service organizations (HSO) currently on long-term sick leave. It also examined the association between the WAI and the single-item question in relation to sick leave, symptoms, and health. Predictive values of the WAI, the changed WAI, the single-item question and the changed single-it…

  • Perceived connections between information and communication technology use and mental symptoms among young adults - a qualitative study

Open Access•Sara Thomée, Lotta Dellve et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The concepts and ideas of the young adults with high ICT use and mental symptoms generated a model of possible paths for associations between ICT exposure and mental symptoms. Demands for achievement and availability as well as personal dependency were major causes of high ICT exposure but also direct sources of stress and mental symptoms. The proposed model shows that factors in different domains may have an impact and should be considered in ep…

  • Consensus criteria for the classification of carpal tunnel syndrome in epidemiologic studies

David Rempel, Bradley Evanoff et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1998•Referencias: 35

Criteria for the classification of carpal tunnel syndrome for use in epidemiologic studies were developed by means of a consensus process. Twelve medical researchers with experience in conducting epidemiologic studies of carpal tunnel syndrome participated in the process. The group reached agreement on several conceptual issues. First, there is no perfect gold standard for carpal tunnel syndrome. The combination of electrodiagnostic study finding…
