  • Investigating patterns of wildfire in Ireland and their correlation with regional and global trends in fire history

    Open Access•Donna Hawthorne, Fraser J G Mitchell•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2018

  • Comparison of a recent elm decline with the mid-Holocene Elm Decline

    Open Access•Laura Flynn, Laura E Flynn et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2018•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 4

  • Quantifying woodland resource usage and selection from Neolithic to post Mediaeval times in the Irish Midlands

    Ellen OCarroll, Ellen O’Carroll et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2016•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 7

The antiquity and context (site or feature type) are the two principal factors that act as a framework for interpreting charcoal and wood data from archaeological sites in the recreation of past woodland environments. This research addresses these parameters through the analysis of over 18,000 charcoal fragments from 57 archaeological excavations carried out along a 61 km road scheme in the midland region of Ireland. Observations on spatial veget…

  • Human impact on the Irish landscape during the late Holocene inferred from palynological studies at three peatland sites

    Open Access•Edwina Cole, Edwina E Cole et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 11

Pollen data covering the last 1200 years from a transect of three peatland sites across Ireland are reported. The data reveal reductions in woodland and increased anthropogenic activity over time. A decline in Corylus-type pollen at around AD 1750 was a dramatic and concurrent event at all three sites which coincided with more intensive land use. Multivariate data analysis reveals that prior to the Corylus-type decline distinct regional differenc…

  • Investigation of the environmental impact of remote volcanic activity on north Mayo, Ireland, during the mid-Holocene

    Open Access•Rosaleen B Dwyer, Fraser J G Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1997•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 4

Seven layers of microscopic tephra have been detected in ombrotrophic peat from western Ireland. A radiocarbon chronology suggests that two of the tephra layers were deposited around 4000 BP. Pollen, fungal spores and testate amoebae have been analyzed from the peat immediately above and below the tephra layers. These analyses provide information of changes in the landscape surrounding the bog and as well as conditions on the bog surface. Analysi…
