Open Access•Mehrdad Khezri, Saba Rouhani et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2026

BACKGROUND: The increasing presence of fentanyl in the illicit drug supply has been associated with rising overdose mortality in the United States, but the extent to which it is associated with nonfatal overdose morbidity remains unknown. We examined the association between the proportion of fentanyl reports in illicit drug seizures and state-level rates of nonfatal overdose emergency department (ED) visits. • HIV-Stigmatizing Beliefs and Attitudes as a Barrier to Early PrEP Care Continuum Engagement Among People Who Inject Drugs

    Open Access•Suzan M Walter, Suzan M Walters et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2026

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective prevention strategy, yet awareness, knowledge, and willingness to use it among people who inject drugs (PWID) remains inadequate despite widespread eligibility. Stigma, particularly HIV-stigmatizing beliefs and attitudes, may be a key barrier to engagement at early stages of the PrEP care continuum. We examine how HIV-stigmatizing beliefs and attitudes affect PrEP awareness, knowledge, and…

Additional contributing factors may include other shifts in the drug supply not captured by fentanyl prevalence in illicit drug seizures, shifts in drug use behavior, and the effect of public health programs, interventions, and policies

Open Access•Zahra Abdolahinia, Zahra Jaafari et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

The transition to injection drug use among PWID in Iran often occurs within a decade of initial drug use and is influenced by demographic, social, and psychological factors. Prevention strategies should focus on early intervention for at-risk youth, address mental health needs, and leverage peer influence. Policymakers should prioritize evidence-based, multi-faceted approaches that target both individual and structural factors to delay or prevent…

Homelessness among people who inject drugs (PWID) represents a significant and complex public health challenge. We aimed to determine homelessness’s prevalence and associated factors among PWID in Iran from July 2019 to March 2020 and between May and August 2023. This study analyzed data from two national sur…
