Household-related stress, intimate partner violence and mental health
These novel baseline findings may support the relevant stakeholders to design further research and programmes to strengthen emergency preparedness for the women living in informal settlements of Urban Bangladesh. A rights-based approach, as has been shown effective elsewhere, may offer a strategy to enhance the overall well-being
Political economy of tobacco tax in Bangladesh
Our findings illustrate a complex interplay of political economy factors that challenge the design and implementation of tobacco taxes in Bangladesh. Creating opportunities for consultation and collaboration between the Ministries of Finance and Health regarding the formulation of tobacco taxes will be very important. National action plans with multi-stakeholder involvement are essential to achieving tobacco control goals through actionable steps

Knowledge, attitude, and practices related to lead pollution among adolescents and caregivers of young children living near Used Lead Acid Battery (Ulab) recycling sites in Bangladesh
The population had a high potential for lead exposure. Their knowledge about lead was limited, and risk perception was moderate. To reduce lead exposure and increase knowledge and awareness among the at-risk population, it is crucial to take measures such as mass awareness campaigns through media and schools. It is important to strengthen the implementation of existing policies, such as policies on leaded gasoline, paints, and lead-acid batteries…
Diet quality and associations with motivation and ability to consume a healthy diet among adolescents from urban low-income households in Bangladesh
In low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban areas, adolescent diets consist mainly of energy-dense and nutrient-poor foods, putting them at risk of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases (NCD). In Bangladesh, little is known about the diet quality of adolescents, their food choices and the drivers of such choices. This study assessed motivations and ability to consume a healthy diet among adolescent girls and boys from low-inco…
Framing health taxes
Health taxes are effective policy instruments to save lives, raise government revenues and improve equity. Health taxes, however, directly conflict with commercial actors’ interests. Both pro-tax health advocates and anti-tax industry representatives seek to frame health tax policy. Yet, little is known about which frames resonate in which settings and how framing can most effectively advance or limit policies. To fill this gap, we conducted qual…

Violations of International Code of Breast‐milk Substitutes (BMS) in commercial settings and media in Bangladesh
The International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes (BMS) instituted to protect breastfeeding against unethical marketing, has been adopted by many countries, including Bangladesh. Despite national adoption, evidence suggests violations occur and inadequate BMS Code implementation is an issue. The study aimed to assess violations of the International BMS Code and the national 'Breast-milk Substitutes, Infant Foods, Commercially Manufac…

Promoting healthy foods among urban school children in Bangladesh
There were many challenges to promoting healthy foods to school children within and outside the school. It is important to formulate policies and guidance to create a supportive environment for healthy foods in and in the proximity of schools. It is also important to educate consumers about identifying and choosing healthy foods. Laws related to food safety should be adequately implemented to boost the population's confidence in safety of availab…
A place-based analysis of Covid-19 risk factors in Bangladesh urban slums
The findings highlight the practical constraints on implementing, in slums, the conventional COVID19 management approaches of social distancing, regular hand washing, and not sharing spaces. It has implications for the management of future respiratory epidemics
Feasibility, acceptability and initial outcome of implementing community scorecard to monitor community level public health facilities
The findings suggest that CSC is a feasible and acceptable tool to engage community and healthcare providers in monitoring and managing health facilities. For countries with health systems faced with challenges around accountability, quality and coverage, CSC has the potential to improve community level health-service delivery. The findings are intended to inform program implementers, donors and other stakeholders about context, mechanisms, outco…
‘We have the internet in our hands’
BACKGROUND: Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) which enable people to access, use and promote health information through digital technology, promise important health systems innovations which can challenge gatekeepers' control of information, through processes of disintermediation. College students, in pursuit of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information, are particularly affected by gatekeeping as strong social and cultura…
A community-based cluster randomised controlled trial in rural Bangladesh to evaluate the impact of the use of iron-folic acid supplements early in pregnancy on the risk of neonatal mortality
This trial has been registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ANZCTR) on 31 May 2012. The registration ID is ACTRN12612000588897
Policy content and stakeholder network analysis for infant and young child feeding in Bangladesh
Although there is strong supportive policy environment for IYCF, it is important that policies cover all populations. Our analysis indicated that opportunities to strengthen the policy environment include: expanding population coverage, increasing inter-sector coordination, improving translation of policy objectives to implementation-level documents, and the engagement of non-public sectors. In addition, we recommend explicit strategies to engage…
Analysis of stakeholders networks of infant and young child nutrition programmes in Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan
International stakeholders were highly involved in both the funding and technical support activities related to IYCF practices across these nine study sites. Government stakeholders received more support for funding and technical support activities from other stakeholders compared with the support that they offered. Stakeholders were, in general, more engaged for technical support activities compared with the funding activities
Opportunities for strengthening infant and young child feeding policies in South Asia
The key opportunities for strengthening IYCF policy support were in relation to translating strategic directives into implementation level documents; improving multi-sectoral support and coordination; and increased clarity regarding roles and responsibilities of frontline workers interacting with mothers. These findings can support efforts to strengthen IYCF policy at the national and regional level
Understanding Health Information Seeking from an Actor-Centric Perspective
This paper presents a conceptual approach for discussing health information seeking among poor households in Africa and Asia. This approach is part of a larger research endeavor aimed at understanding how health systems are adapting; with possibilities and constraints emerging. These health systems can be found in a context of the changing relationships between states, markets and civil society in low and middle income countries. The paper starts…
How can formative research inform the design of an iron-folic acid supplementation intervention starting in first trimester of pregnancy in Bangladesh
Our study suggests that introduction of IFA supplementation early in pregnancy is feasible with support from CHWs. Promotion of IFA could benefit from efforts to include culturally sensitive reasons for usage; improvement of the CHW training modules; targeted home visits and counselling; and outreach to standardize messages
How much salt do adults consume in climate vulnerable coastal Bangladesh
It is important to create awareness about the implication of excessive salt intake on health and to develop strategies for reducing salt intake that can be implemented at the community-level. A sustainable policy for salt reduction in the Bangladeshi diet should be formulated with special emphasis on coastal areas
The Bangladesh paradox
Causes of neonatal and maternal deaths in Dhaka slums
Delivery at a health facility with child assessment within a day of delivery and appropriate treatment could reduce neonatal deaths. Maternal mortality is unlikely to reduce without delivering at facilities with basic Emergency Obstetric Care (EOC) and arrangements for timely referral to EOC. There is a need for a comprehensive package of services that includes control of infectious diseases during pregnancy, EOC and adequate after delivery care
