  • Stable Isotope Analysis of Ancient Maya Skeletal Remains from Late Postclassic Iximche', Guatemala

    Open Access•Stephen L Whittington, David M Reed et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 31

War, captives, and human sacrifice were parts of Late Postclassic (AD 1250-1524) Maya culture in highland Guatemala. Las Casas (1958:152) wrote that the supreme lord "put the heads of the sacrificed on some poles on a certain altar dedicated only to this, where they had these for some time, after which they buried them." These cultural aspects show up in human remains excavated at Iximche', the Kaqchikel Maya capital. Here, we integrate previousl…

  • Teotihuacan site 19

    Open Access•Michael W Spence, Sergio Gómez Chávez et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 44

Site E19 (19:N1W5), near Tlailotlacan, the “Zapotec Barrio” of Teotihuacan, contains evidence of both Tlailotlacan and Michoacan affiliation. To verify and better understand the Michoacan relationship, 22 enamel and 19 bone samples from five E19-affiliated burials were analyzed to determine their oxygen isotope compositions, which provide an indication of an individual's area of residence when that particular tissue was forming. Because prismatic…

  • San José 520

    Open Access•Michael W Spence, Karyn C Olsen et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 33

San José 520 is a Classic period hamlet of single-family residences in the urban periphery of Teotihuacan, just beyond the southeast edge of the city. Three burial features were associated with one of the residences, AF2. One of the features contained the burial of a single adult, another the successive burials of eight adults and one neonate, and the third held a neonate. We analyzed 29 bone and enamel samples from the adults for bioapatite phos…

  • Investigating Diet and Disease in a Medieval German Poorhouse Population using Isotopic Analysis of Human and Faunal Tissues

Karyn C Olsen, Kristin von Heyking et al.•ARTICLE•Bioarchaeology International•2018

This study investigates a medieval (twelfth to sixteenth century) poorhouse skeletal collection from Regensburg, Germany, by assessing diet and health. Medieval poorhouses were an early form of social care facility that offered permanent shelter to the sick and destitute. The Regensburg sample offers a chance to explore the lives of an underprivileged group in larger medieval society. Isotopic data from bone collagen, and structural carbonate are…

  • Isotopic anthropology of rural German medieval diet

    Open Access•Karyn C Olsen, Christine D White et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2018•Citada por: 22•Referencias: 63

This study investigates the diet of an eleventh century CE parish community located in northwestern Germany. We assessed the isotopic compositions of human (n = 24) and faunal (n = 17) bone collagen (δ13Ccol, δ15Ncol) and human structural carbonate (δ13Csc) using skeletal material recovered from the Dalheim cemetery. Traditional interpretation of the isotopic data indicates that Dalheimresidents likely relied on a C3 plant-based diet and consumed…

  • Intraskeletal isotopic compositions (δ 13 C, δ 15 N) of bone collagen

    Open Access•Karyn C Olsen, Christine D White et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2014•Citada por: 37•Referencias: 47

Paleodiet research traditionally interprets differences in collagen isotopic compositions (δ 13 C, δ 15 N) as indicators of dietary distinction even though physiological processes likely play some role in creating variation. This research investigates the degree to which bone collagen δ 13 C and δ 15 N values normally vary within the skeleton and examines the influence of several diseases common to ancient populations on these isotopic compositio…
