Reconstruction of climatic and socio-economic impacts on the landscape of northern Tuscany (Italy) over the last 2000 years based on palaeoecological and historical evidence
Alla corte di re e marchesi
This paper analyzes archaeological data and written sources to reveal the structures of public power that were in operation in the cities of Lucca and Pisa between the 6th and 12th centuries. Its goal is to begin to characterize their topographical, urban and functional aspects. The comparison between the two cities is inspired by new readings of the excavations conducted in Lucca between 1987 and 2009 (at piazza San Giusto; via del Crocifisso, v…
What Lies Beyond Sight? Applications of Ultraportable Hyperspectral Imaging (VIS-NIR) for Archaeological Fieldwork
This paper discusses the use of a small ultraportable hyperspectral camera in the VIS-NIR (Visible-Near Infrared) range for archaeological fieldwork and its hardware, data processing workflows, and spectral information that can be used for in situ screening. Hyperspectral imaging is a widespread, non-destructive analytical technique used in various disciplines for highlighting invisible patterns and mapping the spectral signatures of selected tar…
Evidence of Barbarian migrations and interpersonal violence during the Gothic War in sixth-century Tuscany
Stable isotopic reconstruction of dietary changes across Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages in Tuscany
Post mortem fetal extrusion
Archaeometric study of natural hydraulic mortars
Organic residue analysis of experimental, medieval, and post-medieval glazed ceramics
Medieval D ark E arth in an Active Alluvial Setting from the U ffizi G allery Complex in F lorence, I taly
Archaeological excavations at the B iblioteca M agliabechiana, which is part of the U ffizi gallery complex in F lorence ( T uscany, central I taly), exposed D ark E arth deposits between alluvial sediments of the nearby A rno R iver. The term D ark E arth refers to thick, dark colored, and seemingly homogeneous deposits occurring in urban settings throughout E urope, broadly dated to the post‐ R oman period. The stratigraphic sequence of the B i…
Siena in the early Middle Ages
The data from excavations around the hospital of Santa Maria in Siena help to build a picture of the city in the early Middle Ages. Comparison is made with the rural site of Montarrenti, and significant differences between the economic development in the town and country are observed, although both suffered decline. Settlement, and economic activity in the city of Siena are seen to go into recession in the post‐Roman period, but signs of growth b…
