Patina Formation and Corrosion Processes in Sefidruy Beta Bronze Artifacts From the Rasht Archaeology Museum, Iran
High‐tin bronze artifacts, known as Sefidruy vessels and preserved in the Rasht Archaeology Museum, Iran, were examined to investigate patina formation and corrosion processes. Dating mainly to the Sasanian period (224–651 ce ) and originating from Gilan province, these objects reflect a distinct copper–tin alloying tradition. Elemental analyses confirmed 20wt%–22 wt% tin with minor lead, whereas metallography revealed α and β (martensitic) phase…
An Archaeometallurgical Investigation on Some Archaeological Metal Finds From the Sasanian Site of Jahāngir, Western Iran
Twelve metal artifacts from recent excavations at the Sasanian archaeological site of Jahāngir in western Iran have been analyzed. These items include both decorative and utilitarian artifacts. The samples were examined using micro‐X‐ray fluorescence (μ‐XRF), scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS), and metallography techniques. The analysis revealed that 11 of the artifacts were made from various copper a…

Iron age metal trade between the Atlantic and the Baltic Sea
Sasanian and early Islamic copper-base metalworking at Qasr-e Abu Nasr, south-central Iran
A group of metal objects excavated at Qasr-e Abu Nasr in south-central Iran in the 1930s, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has been analyzed to examine metalworking techniques and metallurgical processes. Thirty-three objects were studied and analyzed by micro-X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and metallography techniques. The results of these analyses show a wide range …
Provenance of the Bronze Age lapis lazuli pieces from the Early Urban Center of Konar Sandal, Jiroft, Southern Iran
The sources of lapis lazuli objects found in the Bronze Age of the Iranian Plateau and its trade routes have been a subject of interest and a research question. Four archaeological pieces of lapis lazuli recovered from a stone-working workshop in the Bronze Age site of Konar Sandal South (Jiroft Plain), southern Iran, were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) techni…
Minero‐chemical and provenance analysis of Achaemenian lapis lazuli cylinders from Persepolis
Five archaeological plain cylinders made of lapis lazuli found in excavations at the Persepolis World Heritage Site ( c .550–330 BCE) were analysed using wavelength‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectroscopy, X‐ray powder diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy techniques with the goal of characterizing the chemical–mineralogical composition and identify…
Parthian dyed fabric discovered from Kuh-e Khwaja archaeological site, Sistan, Iran
Examination of a rare dyed fabric from the Parthian period recovered at Kuh-e Khwaja archaeological site in Sistan, Iran. • Identification of indigo and madder as the dyes used for blue and red fibers respectively. • Identification of wool fibers used in the production of the dyed yarns. • Contribution to the limited exploration of the textile history of the region. The purpose of this investigation is to examine a dyed fabric recovered from Kuh-…
Lead isotope analysis of Bronze Age copper alloy objects from Deh Dumen graveyard, southwestern Iran

An archaeometallurgical study of Achaemenid copper-base artefacts from the Persepolis World Heritage Site, Iran
Experimental evaluation of the consolidation treatments of low porosity limestone from the historic monument of the Anahita Temple of Kangavar, Iran
Long-Term Embrittlement of Ancient Copper and Silver Alloys
The manifestations of ancient metals’ embrittlement, cracking and fracture, are challenging problems for restorers and conservators, yet the scientific understanding of these problems is limited. In particular, the study and interpretation of fracture surfaces, fractography, is a minor or non-existent consideration for most archaeometallurgical investigations. This paper presents a survey of fractographic analyses, in combination with the more wi…

Bronze alloy production during the Iron Age of Luristan
Microscopic and microanalytical study on Sasanian metal objects from Western Iran
Recent archaeological excavation in western Iran discovered a Sasanian palace called Ghaleh Guri (Qela Gowri) beside of the Seimarreh River. As part of the archaeometric studies on the site, five metallic objects (a coin, a disc, a vessel, a decorated strip and some pieces with no specific function) were sampled and analysed using OM and SEM-EDS to determine alloy composition and microstructure. The results showed that strip is made of copper, di…
Iron Age tin bronze metallurgy at Marlik, Northern Iran
Technical Studies on the Bronze Age Metal Artefacts from the Graveyard of Deh Dumen, South-Western Iran (Third Millennium BC)
During the excavations of the graveyard at the site of Deh Dumen in south-western Iran, 15 graves from the Early/Middle Bronze Age were uncovered that contained a variety of metallic artefacts. This paper reports on the analysis of nine metal artefacts, including eight broken vessels and a decorative strip that covered the handle of a dagger. The ICP–MS results showed that the bodies of the vessels are made of tin bronze alloy with variable amoun…
