  • Microbial degradation of Pleistocene permafrost-sealed fossil mammal remains

Open Access•Gabriela Calábková, Jiri Chlachula et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2023

Paleontological remains retrieved from permafrost represent the most informative records of Pleistocene ecosystems. Different levels of past microbial activity affecting fossil material preservation are presented for two selected bone samples—an almost intact Bison sp. metacarpus (45.0 ± 5.0 14 C ka BP) and a weathered Equus sp. metacarpus (37.8 ± 1.7 14 C ka BP) from the recently exposed cryogenic geo-contexts in the Yana River basin, NE Yakutia…

  • Climate-Change Induced Permafrost Degradation in Yakutia, East Siberia

    Open Access•Jolanta Czerniawska, Jiri Chlachula•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2020

Current climate change in the northern regions is a well-recognized phenomenon. In central Yakutia (the Sakha Republic), the long-term trend displays a consistent mean annual air temperature (MAAT) increase from −9.6 ̊C (1980) to −6.7 ̊C (2019), corresponding to an average 0.07 ̊C annual rise, with pronounced temperature anomalies in the last decade. The analyzed meteorological records of the past 40 years indicate a progressing climate change pa…

  • Environmental context and adaptations of prehistoric and early historical occupation in the Southern Altai (SW Siberia-East Kazakhstan)

    Open Access•Jiri Chlachula•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2019•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 48

The Altai Mountains are well-known for their unique archaeological records, with rich, chronologically sequenced Palaeolithic, Neolithic and the Bronze Age (late fourth-early first millennium BC) sites and, in particular, the Iron Age Scytho-Siberian and early historical monuments represented by burial sites, ritual structures, and rock-art. The Altai prehistoric archaeological localities are distributed across a broad range of topographic and ec…

  • Correlation and interpretation of paleosols and loess across European Russia and Asia over the last interglacial–glacial cycle

    Open Access•Nathaniel W Rutter, Dean Rokosh et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

Loess-paleosol sequences of the last interglacial-glacial cycle are correlated from European Russia to central Siberia and the Chinese Loess Plateau. During cold periods represented by marine oxygen isotope stages (OIS) 2 and 4, loess deposition dominated in the Russian Plain and the Loess Plateau. In central Siberia, loess deposition took place also, but five to seven thin, weakly developed paleosols are identified in both stages. OIS 3, in the …
