Racial disparities in the receipt of therapies for cancer, hypertension, and diabetes, and in mortality in a large population-based cohort of older men with prostate cancer
There were substantial racial disparities in the receipt of cancer treatments and antihypertension and antidiabetic drugs. Non-Hispanic Black patients with prostate cancer still had a considerably higher risk of all-cause and cancer-specific mortality than non-Hispanic Whites after accounting for demographic, therapy, and tumor factors
Age and Racial Disparities in the Utilization of Anticancer, Antihypertension, and Anti-diabetes Therapies, and in Mortality in a Large Population-Based Cohort of Older Women with Breast Cancer
Spatial Analysis of Industrial Benzene Emissions and Cancer Incidence Rates in Texas
This paper presents a spatial analysis of the association between industrial benzene emissions and the 10-year incidence rates of cancers likely to be associated with benzene exposure (Lymphohematopoietic, lung and lip cancers) at the county level in Texas. The spatial distribution of incident cases of the above cancers between 2004 and 2013 was assessed at the county level and found to have positive spatial auto-correlation. Subsequently, point …
Racial, Socioeconomic, and Geographic Disparities in the Receipt, Timing to Initiation, and Duration of Adjuvant Androgen Deprivation Therapy in Men with Prostate Cancer
Differences in treatment and survival among African-American and Caucasian women with early stage operable breast cancer
There were racial disparities between black and white women in receiving adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy following BCS. Higher risk of mortality in black compared to white women was found only in those receiving no chemotherapy. Future studies should explore the root causes of racial disparities beyond treatment factors
External Validation of Medicare Claims for Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Compared With Medical Chart Reviews
BACKGROUND: Although Medicare claims data have been increasingly used to examine the patterns and outcomes of cancer chemotherapy, their external validity has not been well studied. OBJECTIVES: We sought to validate Medicare claims for chemotherapy compared with medical chart reviews. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We completed medical chart reviews for 1228 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer at age 65 and older between 1993 and 1999 in New Mexic…
Accuracy and Completeness of Medicare Claims Data for Surgical Treatment of Breast Cancer
BACKGROUND: Although a number of studies have used Medicare claims data to study trends and variations in breast cancer treatment, the accuracy and completeness of information on surgical treatment for breast cancer in the Medicare data have not been validated. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the accuracy and completeness of Medicare claims data for breast cancer surgery to determine whether Medicare claims can serve as a source of data to augmen…
A community based stroke register in a high risk area for stroke in north west England
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To develop a community based stroke register to assess the magnitude of the problem of stroke in an entire health district in a high risk area for stroke. DESIGN: Community based stroke register from general practice data. SETTING: East Lancashire Health Authority with a 1995 population of 534,287. PATIENTS: The stroke register was developed and maintained for one calendar year in East Lancashire between 1 July 1994 and 30 June 1…
