Although previous studies have highlighted the benefits of VSLAs, there is limited research on how women's marital status affects their experiences within th…
Key predictors of postpartum depression and anxiety symptoms among mothers in Kilifi, Kenya
Postpartum mental health disorders remain a substantial burden in SSA. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using ML to predict depressive and anxiety symptoms in postpartum mothers. The findings identify key predictors, notably increased household food insecurity, alongside socioeconomic status and maternal health characteristics, that could inform the design and testing of targeted interventions. Future studies should include external val…
Neonatal Jaundice Treatment Versus Recommendations
Neonatal jaundice (NNJ) is a leading cause of death in the early neonatal period, disproportionately affecting newborns in sub-Saharan Africa. In a setting without access to rapid assessment via transcutaneous bilirubin meter, we sought to determine how closely the diagnosis and treatment of neonatal jaundice at an urban district hospital aligned with retrospective assessment and treatment recommendations using the BiliApp (based on the UK NICE G…
Using a Hand-Held Icterometer to Screen for Neonatal Jaundice
A hand-held, low-tech icterometer is an important potential mechanism for improving early jaundice identification in low-resource settings. Further studies using larger sample sizes with a higher prevalence of hyperbilirubinemia are warranted
Perinatal loss in Tanzania
Over 98% of stillbirths and neonatal deaths occur in Low- and Middle-Income Countries, such as Tanzania. Despite the profound burden of perinatal loss in these regions, access to facility or community-based palliative and psychosocial care is poor and understudied. In this study we explore perinatal loss through the lens of front-line healthcare providers, to better understand the knowledge and beliefs that guide their engagement with bereaved fa…

Effect of Group Antenatal Care on Breastfeeding Knowledge and Practices Among Pregnant Women in Ghana
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months after birth to ensure child health and survival. Antenatal care provides an opportunity to educate pregnant women on optimal breastfeeding practices. A cluster-randomized control trial in Ghana examined the impact of group antenatal care on breastfeeding knowledge and practice. The study enrolled 1761 pregnant women from 14 health facilities in Ghana. …
Knowledge, Acceptance, and Uptake of Family Planning
The use of family planning (FP) methods significantly contributes to improved outcomes for mothers and their offspring. However, the use of FP remains low, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. A cluster randomized controlled clinical trial was implemented in Ghana, comparing group antenatal care (ANC) with routine care. The group ANC intervention included eight meetings where the seventh group meeting incorporated information and dis…

Challenges to diagnosing and managing preeclampsia in a low-resource setting
Preeclampsia is a leading cause of global maternal morbidity and mortality. The greatest burden of disease is in low- and middle-income countries where healthcare providers face significant, understudied, challenges to diagnosing and managing preeclampsia. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to explore the challenges of diagnosing and managing preeclampsia from the perspectives of obstetric doctors. Participants were doctors wh…
Provider perspectives on Asram in Ghana
Neonatal mortality is one of the leading causes of under-five mortality globally, with the majority of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. In Ghana, there is a belief in an array of newborn conditions, called Asram, that are thought to have a spiritual, rather than physical, cause. These conditions are predominantly managed by traditional healers as they are considered unable to be treated by allopathic medical providers. …
‘I don’t really understand this BP’
Preeclampsia and eclampsia are common and serious complications of pregnancies, often presenting as obstetric emergencies. In low- and middle-income countries, limited numbers of healthcare providers and a high volume of critically ill patients can negatively impact provider communication and counseling. Lack of knowledge or awareness of preeclampsia and eclampsia among pregnant women can lead to delays in health seeking behavior. Our study uses …
Migration, personal physical safety and economic survival

Acceptability and feasibility of insect consumption among pregnant women in Liberia
Maternity waiting homes (MWHs) in Liberia promote facility-based delivery to reduce maternal mortality. However, women often must bring their own food and supplies to MWHs, which makes food insecurity a barrier to the utilisation of MWHs. Consumption of edible indigenous insects is a common practice and has notable nutritional benefits but has not been studied in Liberia as a potential solution to food insecurity at MWHs. The purpose of this stud…
