The effect of hrHPV prevalence on cervical cancer screening strategies
Our study demonstrates that the hrHPV test + VIA strategy is cost-effective both compared to no screening and VIA + colposcopy screening strategy under the optimal (70%) and realistic (8.7%) uptake scenarios, with greater cost-effectiveness at higher hrHPV prevalence levels. While VIA-based strategy is cheaper, self-sampling hrHPV test-based strategy offers greater health benefits. Implementing hrHPV testing in national screening programs at lowe…
High-risk human papillomavirus testing for underscreened populations
The provided estimates can serve to inform policymakers and researchers in the context of implementing hrHPV-based screening in diverse settings
Effectiveness of community-based diabetes and hypertension prevention and management programmes in Indonesia and Viet Nam
Introduction Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have surpassed infectious diseases as the leading global cause of death, with the Southeast Asian region experiencing a significant rise in NCD prevalence over the past decades. Despite the escalating burden, screening for NCDs remains at very low levels, resulting in undetected cases, premature mortality and high public healthcare costs. We investigate whether community-based NCD prevention and manag…
Early evaluation of a screen-and-treat strategy using high-risk HPV testing for Uganda
Background: Uganda has a high burden of cervical cancer and its current coverage of screening based on visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) is low. High-risk HPV (hrHPV) testing is recommended by the World Health Organization as part of the global elimination strategy for cervical cancer. In this context, country-specific health economic evaluations can inform national-level decisions regarding implementation. We evaluated the recommended hrH…
Culturally adapted training for community volunteers to improve their knowledge, attitude and practice regarding non-communicable diseases in Vietnam
Culturally adapted trainings can improve knowledge among community health volunteers which is important for the support of primary healthcare in low- and middle-income countries. Using a digital screening application can be a barrier for the improvement of knowledge, attitude and practice and we suggest using an intergenerational or age-friendly approach, with the supervision of primary healthcare professionals. Future research on behavioral chan…
Strengthening policy engagement when scaling up interventions targeting non-communicable diseases
Policy engagement is an essential component of implementation research for scaling up interventions targeting non-communicable diseases (NCDs). It refers to the many ways that research team members, implementers and policymakers, who represent government decision-making, connect and interact to explore common interests. Well-conducted engagement activities foster co-production, local contextualization and assist in the successful translation of r…
The implementation of community-based programs in Vietnam is promising in promoting health
Background Low-and middle-income countries mostly have ageing populations with many unmet economic, social, or health-related needs, Vietnam being an example. Community-based support in Vietnam, organized as Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs (ISHCs) based on the Older People Associations (OPA) model, can help to meet these needs by the provision of services for various aspects of life. This study aims to assess the implementation of the ISHCs and…
Investigating feasibility of 2021 WHO protocol for cervical cancer screening in underscreened populations

Positive Outcomes of a Comprehensive Health Literacy Communication Training for Health Professionals in Three European Countries
Many professionals have limited knowledge of how to address health literacy; they need a wider range of health literacy competencies to enhance empowerment and person-centred prevention. We evaluated whether: (1) a comprehensive health literacy training increased self-rated competencies of health professionals to address health literacy related problems and support the development of people's autonomy and self-management abilities after training …
Effectiveness of a Comprehensive Health Literacy Consultation Skills Training for Undergraduate Medical Students
Comprehensible communication by itself is not sufficient to overcome health literacy related problems. Future doctors need a larger scope of capacities in order to strengthen a patient's autonomy, participation, and self-management abilities. To date, such comprehensive training-interventions are rarely embedded in curricula, nor systematically evaluated. We assessed whether comprehensive training increased these health literacy competencies, in …
Design and implementation of a health management information system in Malawi
As in many developing countries, lack of reliable data and grossly inadequate appreciation and use of available information in planning and management of health services were two main weaknesses of the health information systems in Malawi. Malawi began strengthening its health management information system with an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of existing information systems, sharing findings with all stakeholders. All were agreed on t…
