Early humans and the sea in Europe
Research on early hominin subsistence has been increasingly concerned with the exploitation of diverse food resources in prehistory, including coastal resources, and its implications on the evolution of technological, behavioural, and ecological adaptations. This paper presents related findings from the MIS 9–8.5 site of Quarto delle Cinfonare (Lazio, Italy). Experimentation and microscopic lithic analysis revealed use-wear traces related to shel…
Social Context Matters for Turn‐Taking Dynamics
Engaging in fluent conversation is a surprisingly complex task that requires interlocutors to promptly respond to each other in a way that is appropriate to the social context. In this study, we disentangled different dimensions of turn‐taking by investigating how the dynamics of child–adult interactions changed according to the activity (task‐oriented vs. freer conversation) and the familiarity of the interlocutor (familiar vs. unfamiliar). Twen…
Communicating Europe
Social media is an important means of communication for political agencies, which makes it possible to engage with large sectors of the public. For institutions which are not directly elected by voters, such as the European Commission (EC), social media can be a strategic tool for increasing perceived legitimacy and citizen engagement, especially in contexts of high politicization. In this paper, we use natural language processing techniques to p…

The Adoration of the Magi by Artemisia Gentileschi analyzed with multispectral imaging and XRF technique
The results of non-invasive diagnostic analyses of the painting Adoration of the Magi by Artemisia Gentileschi are presented. It was created in the 1630s to decorate the choir of the Cathedral of San Procolo in Pozzuoli (Naples, Italy). Multispectral imaging at different wavelengths (VIS, IR and UV) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) were used. The data were integrated and compared with the art historical literature on Artemisia’s activity, especially …

Large language models surpass human experts in predicting neuroscience results
Scientific discoveries often hinge on synthesizing decades of research, a task that potentially outstrips human information processing capacities. Large language models (LLMs) offer a solution. LLMs trained on the vast scientific literature could potentially integrate noisy yet interrelated findings to forecast novel results better than human experts. Here, to evaluate this possibility, we created BrainBench, a forward-looking benchmark for predi…
Aqueix Caught in the Middle . A Demonstrative Choice Task Study of Catalan Demonstratives
Recent studies using the Demonstrative Choice Task (DCT), where participants pair words with a demonstrative with no additional context, have shown that this choice is influenced by word semantics. Here, we applied the DCT to Catalan. We aimed at replicating previous findings and assessing how semantic factors play out in Catalan. We focused specifically on the second term aqueix (that), currently falling out of use. We hypothesized that its resi…
Caregiver linguistic alignment to autistic and typically developing children
BACKGROUND: Language development is a highly interactive activity. However, most research on linguistic environment has focused on the quantity and complexity of linguistic input to children, with current models showing that complexity facilitates language in both typically developing (TD) and autistic children. AIMS: After reviewing existing work on caregiver engagement of children's utterances, we aim to operationalize such engagement with auto…

Spatial communication systems across languages reflect universal action constraints
The extent to which languages share properties reflecting the non-linguistic constraints of the speakers who speak them is key to the debate regarding the relationship between language and cognition. A critical case is spatial communication, where it has been argued that semantic universals should exist, if anywhere. Here, using an experimental paradigm able to separate variation within a language from variation between languages, we tested the u…

The semantics of spatial demonstratives in Spanish
Demonstratives ( this/that in English) are pivotal in communication. In this study, we show that semantic features of referents systematically influence speakers’ choices of demonstrative forms for Spanish nouns in the absence of a guiding context. We used the Demonstrative Choice Task (DCT), previously applied to two-term demonstrative languages (Danish, English, and Italian), and applied it to Spanish, a three-term demonstrative system ( este/e…

Grammar, Gender and Demonstratives in Lateralized Imagery for Sentences
We investigated biases in the organization of imagery by asking participants to make stick-figure drawings of sentences containing a man, a woman and a transitive action (e.g. she kisses that guy). Previous findings show that prominent features of meaning and sentence structure are placed to the left in drawings, according to reading direction (e.g. Stroustrup and Wallentin in Lang Cogn 10(2):193-207, 2018. https://doi.org/10.1017/langcog.2017.19…
New archaeozoological and taphonomic analysis on macro- and megafauna remains from the lower palaeolithic site of ficoncella (tarquinia, central italy)
The site of Ficoncella is located to the north of Rome (Central Italy). It is an alluvial context where animal bones and lithic remains were buried over a short space of time in a floodplain environment during the Lower Palaeolithic. The main faunal evidence is represented by parts of a straight-tusked elephant carcass, but remains belonging to other ungulate species were also identified e.g. cervid and equid bones, as well as diaphysis fragments…
New Data on a Pleistocene Archaeological Sequence in South America
Sítio do Meio, discovered in the 1990s, showed a sedimentary sequence clearly composed of two sets of deposits separated by a zone of large rockfall from the massive collapse of the shelter's overhang. The bottom set, slightly more than 60 cm thick, was trapped between the bedrock (upon which it rested) and the lower part of the roof fall (reaching more than 1 m in the excavation area), and yielded some charcoal without other archaeological mater…

The Middle Palaeolithic settlement of «Le Fond des Blanchards» was discovered in 1996 in a gravel quarry of the Yonne valley (Paris Basin, France). It is contained in an alluvial sequence, the Gron formation, which overlies the 3 ± m incision floor. The settlement has yielded several prehistoric levels attributed to the Lower or Middle Pleniglacial Weichselian substages. The lower levels (DG, DB, D5, D4, D3 and D2) are interstratified in a sandy …
