  • Diel, seasonal, and inter-annual variation in carbon dioxide effluxes from lakes and reservoirs

    Open Access•Małgorzata Gołub, Nikaan Koupaei‐Abyazani et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Accounting for temporal changes in carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) effluxes from freshwaters remains a challenge for global and regional carbon budgets. Here, we synthesize 171 site-months of flux measurements of CO 2 based on the eddy covariance method from 13 lakes and reservoirs in the Northern Hemisphere, and quantify dynamics at multiple temporal scales. We found pronounced sub-annual variability in CO 2 flux at all sites. By accounting for diel vari…

  • The biophysical climate mitigation potential of boreal peatlands during the growing season

    Open Access•Manuel Helbig, J M Waddington et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Peatlands and forests cover large areas of the boreal biome and are critical for global climate regulation. They also regulate regional climate through heat and water vapour exchange with the atmosphere. Understanding how land-atmosphere interactions in peatlands differ from forests may therefore be crucial for modelling boreal climate system dynamics and for assessing climate benefits of peatland conservation and restoration. To assess the bioph…

  • Variability in cold front activities modulating cool-season evaporation from a southern inland water in the USA

Open Access•Heping Liu, Peter D Blanken et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2011

Understanding seasonal variations in the evaporation of inland waters (e.g., lakes and reservoirs) is important for water resource management as well as the prediction of the hydrological cycles in response to climate change. We analyzed eddy covariance-based evaporation measurements from the Ross Barnett Reservoir (32◦26N, 90◦02W; which is always ice-free) in central Mississippi during the cool months (i.e., September–March) of 2007 and 2008, an…

  • On the Determinants of the Skill Premium in Wages

    Timo Vesala•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2008

We study the determinants of the skill premium in a matching model where wages are set in bilateral meetings between workers and firms. As a novelty, disagreeing parties do not have to separate immediately, but they may opt to wait for competing agents to arrive. This waiting option is disproportionately valuable for high-skilled workers because they are better protected against competition. This gives rise to a wage schedule with increasing skil…
