The effect of individualized treatment for participants with substance use disorder on completion of mental health courts programs
OBJECTIVE: Persons with behavioral disorders, including those with dual disorders (DDs; i.e., co-occurring mental and substance use disorders [SUDs]), are overrepresented in the criminal justice system. Mental health courts (MHCs) offer an alternative to incarceration and aim to reduce recidivism. However, research indicates that participants with a SUD often complete MHCs at lower rates than those without, highlighting the need to identify effec…

This study examines the psychometric properties of the ORAC-PCQ, a fourth-generation actuarial tool designed to assess recidivism risk and criminogenic needs among individuals serving short sentences in Quebec. The instrument consists of three sections: Sociocriminological Profile (eight items), Criminogenic Needs (16 items), and Clinical Information (26 unscored items). Based on a sample of 14,320 individuals, we report normative data, optimal c…

Quelques lacun…
Gender Effects in Actuarial Risk Assessment
Actuarial tools play an important role in correctional and risk management systems as they are widely used to assess potential recidivism. In psychometric studies of the predictive value of these tools, it is, rightly or wrongly, common to find all items and all components being given the same weight such that they contribute equally to the case management of individuals and to the determination of criminal recidivism risk. Item Response Theory (…

The Adult Offending Outcomes of Adolescents Who Have Perpetrated a Sex Offense
Being adjudicated for a sex offense carries significant social, legal, and penal implications that are almost unparalleled and adolescents are no exception to this differential treatment by the justice system. This highlights the relevance of providing criminal career information concerning future offending among adolescents who have a record for a sex offense as they age and become adults. Based on prospective longitudinal data collected from a …
It's all about time
Research on confession has usually focused on showing that it is significantly associated with individual, crime-related, and situational/contextual variables and is both a static event and a dichotomous indicator of interview success. Recent work, however, suggests that investigative interviews are a dynamic process in which interrogation strategies change over time. Using a Game Theory perspective, this study looks at the impact of behaviours o…
Quantified Desistance
This paper adopts a conventionalist approach to shed light on the measurement and reification problems that underlie the quantification of desistance from crime in the scientific literature. Analysis of 100 papers spanning three decades indicates that approaches based on theoretical classification have recently lost ground in favor of more sophisticated techniques aimed at empirically identifying subgroups. These techniques convey the impression …
Not a “Get Out of Jail Free Card”
Contrary to popular perceptions, the insanity defense is not a loophole. Differences as to factors influencing the trajectories of the two samples confirm that Review Boards are able to distance their practices from the criminal courts and can set aside, at least in part, the principles of proportionality and punitiveness governing the traditional sentencing practices
One gang dies, another gains? The network dynamics of criminal group persistence
What leads a minority of criminal groups to persist over time? Although most criminal groups are characterized by short life spans, a subset manages to survive extended periods. Contemporary research on criminal groups has been primarily descriptive and static, leaving important questions on the correlates of group persistence unanswered. By drawing from competing perspectives on the relationship between cohesion and group persistence, we apply a…
