That latent sense of otherness
This article traces the evolution of anti-semitism in post-war Italy, from the early responses to the Holocaust to the increasingly concerning signs of contemporary anti-Jewish prejudice. Tracing the discourses of religious and secular attitudes towards Jews, the piece shows how resilient certain stereotypes are, and how assumptions about citizenship continue to undermine the respect of difference in Italy. With a reflection that is meant to be p…
Io so ’
This article analyses three fantasy sequences in contemporary Italian cinema about political terrorism in the period known as the anni di piombo (‘years of lead’). It argues that, faced with divided memories, ideologically-charged narratives of the past, political interference and the so-called Italian anomalies, film-makers have reacted by making the absence of resolution a question in its own right. The article identifies and analyses three spe…

Italian Cinema and the Fascist Past
In Italy, cinema has contributed to constructing a paradox of memory in which the rememberer is asked to prevent past mistakes from happening again and yet is encouraged to forget what those mistakes were, or that they ever even took place. Through an examination of the long-term trends in Italian cinema about the Fascist period, this article explores its recurrent tropes alongside its recurrent absences, isolating in particular the act of killin…
Mussolini’s Dream Factory
As I ventured into this rich and inspiring book, two images kept coming to mind. The first was an advertisement for the film studios at Cinecitta, in the September 1940 issue of Cinema, in which a
Faultlines
A century ago, the opening of the First World War marked the beginning of a new era of European experience. For more than three decades after the July crisis of 1914, the continent was torn apart by wars, revolutions, political upheavals and depressions. To contemporaries it seemed that the nineteenth-century age of relative peace and limited war had passed for good. The paradox of modern European history's barbaric wars and high civilisations wa…
Fascism in Italian Cinema since 1945
From neorealism's resolve to Berlusconian revisionist melodramas, this book examines cinema's role in constructing memories of Fascist Italy. Italian cinema has both reflected and shaped popular perce
The age of innocence? Child narratives and Italian Holocaust films
This article critically assesses the use of children as narrators in two recent Italian Holocaust films: Roberto Benigni's La Vita é Bella (1997) and Ettore Scola's Concorrenza Sleale (2001). The analysis places the films and their choice of narrator in the context of the child in European Holocaust film and argues that the child's perspective, often used to qualify the actions of adult characters and cast a questioning or even accusatory gaze on…

Allegory, applicability or alibi? Historicizing intolerance in Ettore Scola's Concorrenza sleale
In 2001, renowned Italian filmmaker Ettore Scola released his film Concorrenza sleale. Upon its release, Scola stated repeatedly that his historical film about the anti-Jewish legislation of 1938 aspired to go beyond the historical setting in order to convey acritique of intolerance in contemporary Italian society. Moving from an analysis ofthe film's evolution from script to post-production, this article offers a textual and contextual analysis …
Indian Cinema and the Presentist Use of History
This article critically assesses Deepa Mehta's Earth (1998) and Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan (2001) as cultural outputs of recent political and historical debates over the nature of India's nationhood. The article argues that the films politicize history, constructing an innocent past with the aim of advocating a more inclusive Indian society
