  • Holocene glacier history of northeastern Cordillera Darwin, southernmost South America (55°S)

    Open Access•Scott A Reynhout, Michael R Kaplan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

In the Cordillera Darwin, southernmost South America, we used 10 Be and 14 C dating, dendrochronology, and historical observations to reconstruct the glacial history of the Dalla Vedova valley from deglacial time to the present. After deglacial recession into northeastern Darwin and Dalla Vedova, by ~16 ka, evidence indicates a glacial advance at ~13 ka coeval with the Antarctic Cold Reversal. The next robustly dated glacial expansion occurred at…

  • Glacial geomorphology of the central and southern Chilotan Archipelago (42.2°S–43.5°S), northwestern Patagonia

    Open Access•Rodrigo L Soteres, Esteban A Sagredo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2022

We present a geomorphic map of the glacial landforms associated with the Golfo Corcovado ice lobe in northwestern Patagonia. Built upon prior studies, our map elaborates on the central and southern sectors of Isla Grande de Chiloé and neighboring islands. Through a combination of remote sensing techniques and exhaustive fieldwork, we identified a suite of ice-marginal, subglacial, and glaciofluvial features created by the Golfo Corcovado ice lobe…

  • Glacial geomorphology of the Strait of Magellan ice lobe, southernmost Patagonia, South America

Open Access•Rodrigo L Soteres, Carly Peltier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2020

We present a geomorphic map of the landforms created by the Patagonian Ice Sheet during the local Last Glacial Maximum and perhaps prior glaciations in southernmost Patagonia. Building on prior work, the new mapping focuses in unprecedented detail on the right lateral and frontal landforms formed by the Strait of Magellan ice lobe. We produced the map using aerial orthophotography, Sentinel-2 and SPOT satellite imagery, ALOS PALSAR digital elevat…

  • The glacial geomorphology of the Río Corcovado, Río Huemul and Lago Palena/General Vintter valleys, northeastern Patagonia (43°S, 71°W)

Open Access•Tancrède Leger, Andrew S Hein et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2020

This study presents the first detailed glacial geomorphological map of the sediment-landform assemblages formed by three eastern outlet glaciers of the former Patagonian Ice Sheet. These glaciers occupied the Río Corcovado, Río Huemul and Lago Palena/General Vintter valleys, Chubut province, Argentina (43°S, 71°W). By combining remote sensing and field-mapping, we build on previous ice-sheet scale mapping and geological surveys to provide high-re…

  • Equilibrium line altitudes along the Andes during the Last millennium

    Open Access•Esteban A Sagredo, Thomas V Lowell et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Referencias: 6

Deciphering the climate changes that influenced the glacial fluctuations of the last millennium requires documenting the spatial and temporal patterns of these glacial events. Here, we estimate the change in equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) between the most prominent glacial advance of the last millennium and the present for four alpine glaciers located in different climatic regimes along the Andes. For each glacier, we reconstruct scenarios of …

  • Sensitivities of the equilibrium line altitude to temperature and precipitation changes along the Andes

    Open Access•Esteban A Sagredo, Summer Rupper et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

Equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) of alpine glaciers are sensitive indicators of climate change and have been commonly used to reconstruct paleoclimates at different temporal and spatial scales. However, accurate interpretations of ELA fluctuations rely on a quantitative understanding of the sensitivity of ELAs to changes in climate. We applied a full surface energy- and mass-balance model to quantify ELA sensitivity to temperature and precipitat…
