Modern vegetation and its pollen spectra in the Cantabrian mountains, northern Iberian Peninsula, compared with fossil pollen records
The study of the pollen rain from modern vegetation has greatly improved the interpretation of pollen diagrams and our understanding of ancient plant communities. In this study, 76 pollen samples were studied from various vegetation types in Cantabria, northern Iberian Peninsula. The pollen signals of the main taxa were compared to their estimated spatial coverage at various scales (100 m, 1 km and 5 km from the sampling point) using vegetation m…
Overview of environmental changes and human colonization in the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean) and their impacts on vegetation composition during the Holocene
Holocene high-altitude vegetation dynamics in the Pyrenees
Vegetation dynamics and anthropogenically forced changes in the Estanilles peat bog (southern Pyrenees) during the last seven millennia
Potential influence of Bond events on mid-Holocene climate and vegetation in southern Pyrenees as assessed from Burg lake LOI and pollen records
Superimposed on the long-term climate variability attributed to orbital forcing, there are other modes of variability covering timescales from interannual to millennial throughout the Holocene. Their signatures in climate proxy archives can differ substantially because of their lower magnitude and regional diversity. However, if identified they can yield better understanding of the physical mechanisms regionally linking causes and effects. Here w…
Mid-Holocene vegetation and climatic history of the Iberian Peninsula
The aim of this research is to study the climate and vegetation history in the western Mediterranean, in the Iberian Peninsula, during the middle Holocene through pollen analysis. The origin of the deposits varied from the most xeric to more mesic Mediterranean environments. The timing, extent, and progress of the establishment of the Mediterranean climate have a degree of variability depending on the biogeographical region. Analyses of several p…
Holocene treeline changes on the south slope of the Pyrenees
Holocene palaeoenvironment in a former coastal lagoon of the arid south eastern Iberian Peninsula
Introduction to the special issue “Evolution of the landscape and climate in the Mediterranean ecosystem”
Similarities and dissimilarities, synchronisms and diachronisms in the Holocene vegetation history of the Balearic Islands and Sicily
Palynological evidence for vegetational history in semi-arid areas of the western Mediterranean (Almería, Spain)
Three sedimentary sequences from the southeastern littoral of the Iberian Peninsula have been palynologically studied. The results obtained show that during the Holocene no significant forest cover existed in the studied area, so that the different phases identified mainly show an alternation of shrub formations and steppe communities probably determined by limitations that are fundamentally bioclimatic. Highest values of arboreal pollen at the b…
Palynological Evidence for Climatic Change and Human Activity during the Holocene on Minorca (Balearic Islands)
Four pollen diagrams from Minorca (Balearic Islands) have been correlated with other previously studied sequences from Majorca and Minorca to define a Holocene landscape sequence for the region from 8000 yr B.P. to the present. The lower part of the pollen diagrams reflects a climatic phase with more rain and less-marked seasonality than today. Significant quantities of Corylus, Buxus, and mesophilous taxa are found. In the middle part, between 5…
Climatic Change on the Iberian Peninsula Recorded in a 30,000-Yr Pollen Record from Lake Banyoles
The Banyoles lacustrine sequence shows that the vegetational history of the northeastern Iberian Peninsula during the last 30,000 yr follows the North Atlantic pattern of climatic oscillations. The Banyoles pollen diagram, supported by two calibrated 14 C dates and nine U/Th dates, shows a clear interstadial event between 30,000 and 27,000 yr B.P., a Pleniglacial period with minor oscillations that ended abruptly ca. 14,420 ± 410 yr B.P., and a l…
