Hand-to-hand sports and the struggle for belonging
This special issue on hand-to-hand sports aims to analyse how collective identities and forms of group and community belonging are defined, strengthened, built, imagined or even denied in the sportive and social contexts in which hand-to-hand combat or wrestling disciplines are practised. Considering the wide-ranging cross-cultural distribution of combat and wrestling practices in very different cultures and societies across the contemporary worl…
Bolognina gym
This article describes the social organization of the 'Tranvieri' boxing gym in Bolognina, a working class Bologna neighbourhood that has seen rapid change over the last 20 years due to the closure of factories and arrival of immigrants, especially from the Maghreb. The population of the gym has changed accordingly: currently, about two-thirds of those attending the gym as a leisure centre are children of immigrants. I have studied the practices …
Photography and Urban Marginality
In recent years several monographs have appeared in Italy, though even more abroad, as a report of ethnographic research into the everyday life practices of marginal urban social groups; all fall under a disciplinary subfield the author calls “Anthropology of urban marginality.” The authors of these works have increasingly been using technologies other than written representation, as for instance the medium of photography. There is a question at …
City Visualscapes, an Introduction

Sport and public space in contemporary Italian cities
The aim of this special issue is to investigate the role of sports practices and urban spaces in the processes of citizenship construction in Italian cities. By focusing on specific places (gyms and sports fields), but also squares, parks and public spaces in specific urban contexts we intend to analyze the practices of social actors who share these physical and relational spaces by virtue of their engagement in the same sports (boxing, football …
The ring and the street

The gym population has changed accordingly: currently about two-thirds of those attending the gym as a leisure centre have immigrant parents. The author studied the everyda…
Cultural Landscape
This work reports the findings of an investigation by Etna's local councils whose publicly owned land has high concentrations of particularly significant towers. The towers are original stone constructions, presumed to have been built between the end of the 1700s and the beginning of the 1900s and so are unrelated to medieval towers, emblems of ancient yet sophisticated building techniques and located in numerous agricultural areas on the slopes …
