The Politics of Friendship in Feminist Anthropology
Many feminists have been troubled by questions of friendship in ethnographic research. For some critics, such assertions elide power imbalances, invoking a 'sisterly identification' built on essentialist models of gender. In this article I combine insights gained from partisan ethnography in the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition with feminist theory to argue that the problem lies not with claims to friendship as such, but with a naturalized mode…
Feminist Anthropology Confronts Disengagement
Feminist ethnography was a hot topic at anthropology conferences in the 1980s and 1990s. As students, we remember meeting rooms so packed that people crowded in the doorways, straining to hear energetic debates over the negotiation of power, the embodiment of systemic and structural violence, the possibilities for combining scholarship and political activism, and issues of identity and difference – not least the dangers of imposing an ethnocentri…
Debating Rights in the New Northern Ireland
The 1998 Belfast Agreement provided for a Bill of Rights 'to reflect the particular circumstances of Northern Ireland'. Opinion poll evidence indicates strong approval for such a charter. Diverse civil society groups have offered support, as have all the main parties. Yet, over a decade on, the Bill of Rights remains among the unfinished business of the Agreement. What Northern Ireland's 'particular circumstances' demand in terms of codified righ…

Gender and the Politics of Justice in the Northern Ireland Peace Process
This essay explores reactions to the 1996–1997 incarceration of Róisín McAliskey, a young Irish republican, pregnant at the time of her arrest. The case revealed tensions and contradictions in the politics of gender, national identity, and reconciliation at a tentative stage in the Northern Ireland peace process. Special attention is given to the negotiation of the case by the politically diverse Northern Ireland Women's Coalition and other activ…
Writing as a Citizen
■ This article traces a series of frustrations and dilemmas that arose from people's attempts to participate in Northern Ireland's peace process in ways that challenged the reduction of its politics to a single line of conflict. As attempts to expand the possibilities for active citizenship, they were not entirely successful. However, the article argues that dilemmas offer privileged access to contradictions and conflicts at work within both poli…
