Travel choices and green travel potential among university students in Uganda
Student populations are major trip generators in urban areas, yet empirical evidence on travel behavior and green mobility in Ugandan university contexts remains limited. This study examines mode choice and sustainable travel potential among students at Kampala International University (KIU), drawing on a survey of 383 respondents. Descriptive statistics and a Multinomial Logit (MNL) model were used to identify mode choice determinants. Results s…

Decentralisation and Legal Pluralism in Small Towns in Uganda
Weak decentralization, authoritarianism and limited economic development in small towns in Uganda have been seen as key obstacles to political inclusion. However, small towns in theory also hold hope for political inclusion due to the potential for more direct citizen engagement and flexibility to be able to respond to citizens' needs. Drawing on 58 focus groups, 24 key informant interviews, and three feedback meetings across seven towns, this re…
Translocal Livelihoods, Socio‐Economic Differentiation and Lower Level Urbanisation in Uganda
In sub‐Saharan Africa, more than a quarter of the urban population lives in small towns, with rapid lower level urbanisation being driven largely by lacking rural opportunities. A growing interest in translocality considers relationships that position livelihoods within multiple spatial contexts. Terms of inclusion in translocal relationships vary, and the socio‐economic differentiation emerging out of these relationships is understudied. We use …
The role of visual ethnography in co-producing climate information services in cities
Diverse approaches to climate information services are emerging as impacts escalate in an urbanising globe. However, the climate information services involving cities are mainly collaborations with actors from science, multilateral, national and municipal authorities. There are limited efforts to build on knowledge from residents in local communities about risk and response options, to steer collaborations on climate information services. This ar…
Then electricity theft would end, nobody loves stealing”
Despite generally high rates of grid connectivity in African cities, electricity access among users in informal settlements remains heavily constrained. This study explores the challenges that restrict electricity access and use across 25 informal settlements in Kampala, Uganda using a mixed-methods participatory action research (PAR) approach conducted by an inter- and transdisciplinary team. We find that the high cost of electricity, a complex …

Analysing inclusivity within small town development in Uganda and Tanzania
Framed within debates about the inclusivity of urban development, Ubuntu philosophy and an interest in non-metropolitan growth of ordinary places, 15 small but developing towns were selected across Uganda and Tanzania. Growth and development were evidenced by increase in night-time lights and densification/expansion of built-up areas. Analysis of c. 4,000 individuals asked which towns were more, or less, inclusive and why. An inclusivity index co…
Spatial variations and determinants of childhood diarrhea management in Uganda
The study examines the variability of community-based and determinants of childhood diarrhea management including rehydration and feeding therapies using the 2016 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey, UDHS (N = 2,923). The study utilized the Bayesian model and geo-statistical techniques with location (district) and nonlinear metrical attributes (mother’s and child’s age) to gain a better understanding of childhood diarrhea management. The results…

Power dynamics in transdisciplinary research for sustainable urban transitions
Transdisciplinary Research (TDR) fosters collaboration amongst stakeholders from different academic disciplines and sectors of society, to jointly search for solutions to complex challenges including rapid urbanization. In order to enhance collaboration and ensure reciprocity of expertize amongst stakeholders, flattening the hierarchy of power is critical for working together to develop research agendas and experiment solutions. However, context …

Pathways for resilience to climate change in African cities
African cities are largely less-built with agile informal settlements and multiple ecologies that harbor different pathways for resilience to climate change. We undertook a qualitative systematic review of academic and policy evidence, to address the question of what interventions are emerging at neigbourhood to city scale to enhance resilience to climate change in Africa. Resilience at neigbourhood scale often stems from harnessing the local res…

Perceptions of resilience to climate-induced disasters in Mbale municipality in Uganda
Resilience has been raised as a core task within disaster risk reduction frameworks, yet it remains difficult to implement these global ideas in local communities. This study used Community Based Resilience Analysis Approach to investigate the components that are perceived as important in resilience and the extent to which these components have been achieved. It explored the trend of resilience and beneficial interventions for building resilience…

Socio-economic Consequences of Displacement and Resettlement

This article examines different socio-economic consequences of displacement and resettlement caused by the planned oil-refinery site in Uganda. Household survey and interviews were employed to elicit the necessary data, analysed through descriptive statistics, logistic-regre…
Insurgent Urbanism, Citizenship and Surveillance in Kampala City
A great deal of work has been done on the nature of rights and the definitions of citizenship. However, little work has been done that explores how people perceive their citizenship rights and how they act on these perceptions especially in growing cities. High and low intensity protests have inscribed their presence and voice in Kampala city’s streets, thereby becoming integral components of the city landscape. The paper uses critical urban theo…
Urban Adaptation to Energy Insecurity in Uganda
The level of development of a society can be measured not only in terms of quantity of goods and services but also from the energy consumed. The importance of energy security derives from the critical role that it plays in all aspects of livelihoods of any society. The Government of Uganda is committed to well-planned urbanization and effective management of urban growth. This brings issues of low income settlements to the forefront of the nation…
