The potential for posthuman insights to effect socially just pedagogies
In the South African higher education context, which is fraught with inequities and where many feel uncomfortable, the focus on socially just pedagogies and the positioning of teachers in relation to this is not just timeous and relevant, but crucial. The Problems with Language Policy and Planning
This article begins with a critique of dominant approaches to language policy in education that are based on the notion of “rights” and “peoples.” It makes the case for an approach that is based on the tripartite view of social justice, as articulated by Nancy Fraser. Influence of the Past on Professional Lives
This collective commentary is based on the narratives of the author-protagonists, three South African higher education developers who were involved in political activism during their youth. The commentary investigates the continuities between the author-protagonists’ youth and their later professional engagements. Drawing from social realism, the concepts of agency and reflexivity provide a helpful analytic lens. Together, the narratives suggest …

Communities isn't just about trees and shops”
The question of what constitutes ‘a community’ or even ‘ the community’ takes on an extra salience in a divided society such as South Africa where the entire environment remains imprinted with the legacy of enforced segregation along racial lines. Higher education institutions need to prepare emerging health and social service students for the world of practice in a context of diversity, continuing segregation and marked inequality. This article reports on an exploratory qualitative study on 37 students' acquisition of language and literacy. The study closely analyzes a linguistics assignment written in English, the dominant language, given to students at University of the Western Cape belonging to groups speaking English, Afrikaans, or an African language. The study demonstrated that a variety of aspects of a student's learning biography influence her written performance. P…
