Women and Work in Northern Nigeria
Women and Work in Northern Nigeria is a study of the social and economic opportunities open to and seized upon by Muslim Hausa women, primarily in the city of Katsina, Nigeria, over the course of the
Within the Boundaries
The focus of this chapter is the examination and analysis of the practice of karuwanci, which is treated here as a form of labour within particular relations of exchange. The operationalisation of the practice of karuwanci, in terms of the specific kinds of labour undertaken, brings to the fore examination of relations of production and reproduction, and a reconsideration of the extent to which karuwanci replicates or echoes the sexual division o…
Economy, History and Structure of Katsina
This chapter is an introduction to the city and people of Katsina. Beginning with the politico-historical basis of the land of Katsina (Kasar Katsina), the units under discussion become progressively smaller, ending with the compound composition of specific urban wards
Dominant Discourse, Subaltern Voices, and Forms of Resistance
In this chapter, we examine the processes whereby karuwai relate to the various levels and arbiters of power in Katsina, in historical and contemporary contexts. The karuwai themselves were established as a distinct category of women with a recognised place and a liasing representative in the traditional hierarchy, long before colonial intervention. However, over time and with changing authorities, that positioning was superseded by a more nebulo…
Confronting State, Capital and Patriarchy
Women, work and ideology in Nigeria
Struggles to control Nigeria's dwindling resources, and to gain or maintain power within the context of economic crisis, are taking place at local, state, regional and federal levels, within and outside formal political structures. The ideologies with which these struggles have been associated, and the struggles themselves, have particular implications for the effects upon women, mediated and mitigated, however, by class differences. This article…
Selective education
A series of policy initiatives have been put forward in Nigeria over the last two decades aimed at expanding its educational system. But while numbers enroled have increased, gender and class differentials persist. Females have always been represented in smaller numbers than have males and have tended to be disproportionately drawn from the more privileged elements of society. This has broadly accorded with ideologies justifying a primarily domes…
The control of reproduction
Policies and practice relating to the availability of contraception, the accessibility of abortion and the custody of children are measures of the legal and political status of women in any given society. They bear directly on domination of women in the spheres of reproduction and control over the fruits of reproduction, children. Pittin explores how these matters reflect women's rights and opportunities in the case of Nigeria. She is particularl…
Gender and class in a Nigerian industrial setting
This paper examines the relationship between female and male workers in a factory in Zaria. We argue that one of the factors inhibiting the organisation of women as members of the working class is the gender discrimination women face from male co‐workers. Although gender subordination is used and transformed by systems of class exploitation, it is often perceived by women as being of greater immediacy than class oppression. This is partly because…
Migration of Women in Nigeria
Based on a study of women in one Nigerian city, it is the contention of this article that female migration cannot properly be understood or analyzed without reference to a variety of gender-specific factors. This article concentrates on one category of women, the autonomous migrants, and examines the patterns and the precipitating and contributory causes of their migration, and its effects
