Attention is drawn to a hitherto neglected medieval tradition of clay-walled construction in East Anglia. Using data from archaeological excavations the author demonstrates that clay-walled houses were an important element of the housing stock in town and country alike. This paper explores the late Peter Eden's classification of Cambridgeshire plan-forms published by the Royal Commission in the late 1960s and considers the extent to which it can be applied to Norfolk. Most of the plans in Eden's classification can be identified in Norfolk, though the number and chronology of each is subject to considerable variation. Fire Damage in a Rural Community
The bulk of historical research on fires relates to large urban conflagrations. This article, in contrast, looks at the effects of fire in the early-modern countryside, using as a case study the fire in the north Norfolk village of Cley-next-the-Sea in 1612.
