Disagreement management in medical consultations
“Can eat less? Big elder sister”
Address and danmu have each, separately, been widely explored over the past decade. However, the features of address in danmu comments remain underexplored in the scholarly field. By drawing on danmu comments, this paper aims to investigate how address is manifested in polite and impolite comments. Results reveal that commenters make use of a large repertoire of pronouns to achieve impolite effects, while both kinship and non-kinship terms exhibi…

How public discourse functions to restore moral orders
Previous research has extensively examined corporate apologies as webcare in public settings. However, it has paid less attention to apologies made directly to the public despite their potential to evoke responses that reflect social expectations. This study examines corporate public apology strategies and social media users’ follow-up comments, specifically focusing on impolite comments and their underlying rationale. The findings reveal that, d…
Genuine or ostensible politeness
This study examines the use of qingwen (an honorific request marker) across three different historical periods in China and unravels the evolved relationship between qingwen -initiated directives of information-seeking and Chinese politeness. Drawing on the CCL Corpus, this study reveals that: first, qingwen is employed by the socially more powerful to solicit thoughts, ideas or simply answers with gong (treating others with respect) in positive …
Deontic authority-based resolution of deontic right-based resistance in online medical consultation
Previous research has investigated aspects of deontics, epistemics, and resistance in medical settings. However, few have focused on deontics and how resistance shapes the responses of deontic authority ( Stivers and Timmermans 2020 ), especially in online medical counseling. Utilizing the data collected from online medical consultation and adopting a discursive approach, this study investigates how doctors deploy deontic authority to resolve car…

Nǐ kànzhe bàn ba
In Mandarin Chinese, the expression nǐ kànzhe bàn ba can be employed in either ‘you-decide use’ ( you assess and decide by yourself ), whereby the speaker disclaims his/her deontic authority to the recipient in decision-making, or ‘I-claim use’ ( you have to assess and decide cautiously ), whereby he/she claims a higher degree of deontic authority than the recipient when determining a proposed action. Focusing on the ‘I-claim use’ of nǐ kànzhe bà…

Implicit-explicit power motives congruence and forgiveness in the workplace conflict
Purpose In the workplace, forgiveness can increase positive interactions between the victim and offender in the aftermath of a conflict. As an important intrapersonal factor in an organization, a victim’s power motives may shape one’s forgiveness. However, previous research shows inconsistent results because it only considers explicit power motives while ignoring the possible contingent role of implicit power motives in influencing forgiveness. T…

The magic of one person
The use of celebrity endorsements in advertising is quietly pervasive. One brand can be endorsed by either one celebrity or multiple celebrities. Notably, it is more and more common nowadays that a single brand harnesses multiple celebrity endorsers in its advertisement to potentially attract more consumers. Literature on consumer psychology has mainly studied the context of a single celebrity endorsing a single brand, suggesting that source char…
The rite of reintegrative shaming in Chinese public dispute mediation
This paper examines the ways in which mediators deploy the rite of public shaming in the activity type of public mediation, as a pragmatic device by means of which they exert social control. Our data consists of episodes of public mediation events in rural China, aired in the Chinese Television. Our analytic framework is anchored to the model of interactional relational rituals: we interpret shaming as a morally loaded communal interactional prac…

Company apologies require apologizers, which can take the form of one person or multiple people. Does the number of apologizers influence how consumers interpret and respond to that apology? The current research suggests that a single apologizer proves more effective than multiple apologizers because consumers tend to have a stronger empathic response towards one person than towards multiple people. Across one archival study and four experiments,…
Impoliteness Revisited
There is a growing consensus that (im)politeness is associated with participants’ situated evaluations vis-à-vis the moral order (Haugh 2013a, 2015b; Kádár and Haugh 2013). This paper focuses on impoliteness as evaluative practices underpinned by the moral order of qingmian (lit., affection-based face). Drawing on data from Chinese interpersonal conflicts, the study reveals that unmet renqing (favor) expectations and unmet mianzi/lian (face) expe…
Deontic authority in intervention discourse
Our study offers a linguistic-pragmatic examination of instances of bystander intervention, a social action that takes place when a bystander or a group of bystanders intervenes when a wrongdoer abuses a victim or behaves outside socially acceptable norms. We approach this social phenomenon by analyzing data drawn from a database of 11 video-recordings that all involve naturally occurring interactions in public settings in China. The notion of in…
Constructing self-expert identity via other-identity negation in Chinese televised debating discourse
This article investigates the conflictive construction of identities in Chinese interactions. We examine the way in which people build up their own identities as “experts” and negate others’ similar identities in Chinese televised debates with complex participation structure. Our datasets are collected from 120 Chinese televised debates. Using indexicality (Bucholtz, Mary & Kira Hall. 2005. Identity and interaction: a socio-cultural linguistic ap…

The role of metapragmatic expressions as pragmatic manipulation in a TV panel discussion program
This study explores the role of metapragmatic expressions (MPEs) as pragmatic manipulation in a media context, with data drawn from a Chinese TV panel discussion program Tiger Talk. It argues that the program host selects MPEs to manipulate the ongoing interactions, in order to solve or prevent the actual or potential problems in the interactions. Hence, the functioning of MPEs is described as a process consisting of three stages: problem awarene…

Creating meso-contexts
Metapragmatic expressions (MPEs) show the speaker’s reflexive awareness of language use. Drawing on an argumentative TV talk show, this article explores the functions of MPEs in the host’s utterances from the sociocognitive approach (SCA). It argues that MPEs are employed to create “meso-contexts” so as to ensure the progression of the interactions as intended. The data analysis indicates that different types of MPEs activate prior contexts conve…

Contextual enrichment of lexical units in utterance interpretation
The goal of this study is twofold. First, it will focus on the contextual enrichment of lexical units in utterance interpretation and discuss how the semantic multiplicity or underdeteminacy of lexical units is specified in context. It is argued here that relevance theory (Sperber & Wilson 1986/1995; 1998) serves as the most suitable theoretical framework to explain the interplay of lexical units and context. Narrowing and broadening, the two mai…
