  • How observing interactions online affects attitudes and behavioral intention toward online social support

Open Access•Yidi Zhang, Brandon Van Der Heide•ARTICLE•Communication Research Reports•2026

Vicarious interactions refer to active online users serving as surrogates, allowing passive users to observe and experience online interactions without directly participating. A 2 × 2 experiment examined how vicarious interactions within online support communities affect observers’ attitudes toward online social support and influence their behavioral intentions to support others. The result shows that only when observers see the support providers…

  • Theoretical Distinctions Between Emotion and Cognition Content in Supportive Messages

    Open Access•A J Holmstrom, Junwen M Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Research•2026

What constitutes effective supportive message content is a topic of intense interdisciplinary scholarly interest and has palpable real-world implications for individuals’ well-being. Emotion and cognition content are two commonly theorized supportive message forms. Although both are theorized to operate through conversationally induced reappraisal, their relative effects, underlying mediating mechanisms, and boundary conditions for effectiveness …

  • Testing the Effect of Sending an Evaluative Message on Perceiving Others in Computer-Mediated Communication

Open Access•Duy Pham, Duy Tyler Pham et al.•ARTICLE•Media Psychology•2025

Interpersonal mediated communication research has demonstrated that exchanging cues during online interactions can change message receivers’ perception of the senders in socially desirable ways. Building from previous self-transformative work, this work explores how perceptions of others are also shaped by the messages we write evaluating others. More specifically, the research examines the effects of sending different types of evaluative message…

    Open Access•Y Yang, Yukun Yang et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2025•Referencias: 6

This study explored competing predictions about how social interactions among social media hate posters affect the sequential level of hatefulness as toxicity. Analyses involve a thousand original hateful posts and the subsequent posts by the same posters ( N = 1,227,756 posts) on Gab—a platform particularly hospitable to hate messaging—and Likes, Dislikes, and written replies from other users that affirmed or negated the initial hate posts. Like…

  • Analysis of short videos on TikTok for learning Portuguese as a foreign language

Open Access•Yidi Zhang, Margarida Lucas et al.•ARTICLE•Comunicar•2023•Referencias: 1

In recent years, short videos have proliferated on various social media platforms, serving as a visual resource with a long history of use for various educational purposes, including foreign language learning (FLL). Despite the growing interest in the use of such platforms for short video learning, little is currently known about the use of these platforms for FLL, highlighting the need to validate these learning resources within a theoretical fr…

  • Moment-by-moment tracking of audience brain responses to an engaging public speech

Ralf Schmälzle, Hanjie Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Monographs•2023•Referencias: 5

Public speaking engages and entertains audiences. Through neuroimaging, we can examine responses to speeches in real time. Replicating an earlier study, this study carries out two kinds of analyses – forward and reverse correlations. First, we examine how the soundwave carrying the speech relates to brain responses, finding that bilateral auditory cortex responses track with the speech signal's energy. Second, we use the speech-evoked brain respo…

The results were classified according to three categories based on the scope of the short videos in research: (1) short videos as a medium, (2) short videos as an intervention, and (3) short videos as the central focus of studies. Such a categorization enabled us t…
