  • Comparing Patient Perspectives on Diabetes Management to the Deficit-Based Literature in an Ethnic Minority Population

    Open Access•Kathleen Abu-Saad, Nina Daoud et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Marginalized racial/ethnic minorities have disproportionately high rates of type 2 diabetes prevalence, complications and mortality. Researchers and policymakers have typically addressed these disparities using a deficit-based discourse focused on individual/cultural deficiencies or failure. A mixed-methods study was used to compare the deficit discourse to the perspectives of adults with diabetes in the Arab minority in Israel, using data from 1…

  • Stages of change of the readiness to quit smoking among a random sample of minority Arab -male smokers in Israel

Open Access•Nina Daoud, Samah Hayek et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

For these policies to promote cessation more successfully, tailored interventions and campaigns may be needed to increase the readiness to quit smoking …

  • Rapid assessment tools for ranking pregnant minority women into multi-nutrient exposure groups

    Open Access•Kathleen Abu-Saad, Iris Shai et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2011

Objective To develop a targeted FFQ (TFFQ) and evaluate its effectiveness for ranking minority women by their intake of multiple nutrients important to a healthy pregnancy. Design In Stage 1, food groups derived from 24 h recall dietary data were entered into a stepwise multiple regression model to identify ‘discriminating’ foods for the TFFQ; in Stage 2, the TFFQ and a 24 h recall were administered to pregnant women. The TFFQ data were used to c…

  • Maternal Nutrition and Birth Outcomes

    Kathleen Abu-Saad, Drora Fraser•ARTICLE•Epidemiologic Reviews•2010

In this review, the authors summarize current knowledge on maternal nutritional requirements during pregnancy, with a focus on the nutrients that have been most commonly investigated in association with birth outcomes. Data sourcing and extraction included searches of the primary resources establishing maternal nutrient requirements during pregnancy (e.g., Dietary Reference Intakes), and searches of Medline for "maternal nutrition"/[specific nutr…

  • Assessing individual dietary intake from common-plate meals

    Open Access•Kathleen Abu-Saad, Danit R Shahar et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2009

Objective The purposes of the present study were to estimate individual intake from common-plate meals among Bedouin Arabs using a modified 24 h recall questionnaire, and to evaluate reported energy intake (EI) by comparison with estimated energy requirement (EER). Design Weighed records were used to develop a method of quantifying intake from common plates. Reported EI and nutrient intakes were obtained from administration of the modified 24 h r…
