  • Movie smoking and teen smoking behavior

Christopher J Ferguson, Chris Ferguson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Popular Media•2020

Policy makers and some scholars have expressed concerns regarding potential links between youth viewing smoking in movies and smoking in real life. Some advocacy groups have expressed the view that causal links between movie smoking and youth smoking definitively exist. However, research on actual smoking behaviors is relatively narrow, correlational, and tend to produce very small effect sizes. The current paper reviews the methodology of movie …

  • Reexamining the Findings of the American Psychological Association’s 2015 Task Force on Violent Media

Open Access•Christopher J Ferguson, Allen Copenhaver et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Psychological…•2020

In 2015, the American Psychological Association (APA) released a task-force technical report on video-game violence with a concurrent resolution statement linking violent games to aggression but not violent crime. The task-force report has proven to be controversial; many scholars have criticized language implying conclusive evidence linking violent games to aggression as well as technical concerns regarding the meta-analysis that formed the basi…

  • A weak scientific basis for gaming disorder

Open Access•Antonius J van Rooij, Christopher J Ferguson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Addictions•2018

We greatly appreciate the care and thought that is evident in the 10 commentaries that discuss our debate paper, the majority of which argued in favor of a formalized ICD-11 gaming disorder. We agree that there are some people whose play of video games is related to life problems. We believe that understanding this population and the nature and severity of the problems they experience should be a focus area for future research. However, moving fr…

  • Scholars’ open debate paper on the World Health Organization ICD-11 Gaming Disorder proposal

Open Access•Espen Aarseth, Anthony M Bean et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Addictions•2016

Concerns about problematic gaming behaviors deserve our full attention. However, we claim that it is far from clear that these problems can or should be attributed to a new disorder. The empirical basis for a Gaming Disorder proposal, such as in the new ICD-11, suffers from fundamental issues. Our main concerns are the low quality of the research base, the fact that the current operationalization leans too heavily on substance use and gambling cr…

    Open Access•Patrick M Markey, Patrick Markey et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2013

This study extended previous research on complementarity through the examination of female same‐gender romantic dyads. One‐hundred and forty‐four women (72 couples) completed interpersonal circumplex ratings of their romantic partner and a relationship measure of love and harmony. Results indicated that high levels of relationship quality were reported by participants who were warm and submissive or who had partners who possessed these characteri…

    Open Access•Charlotte Markey, Charlotte H Markey et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2011•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 33

In this study, romantic partners' weight status and weight concerns were examined using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model. One hundred and four heterosexual couples' ( N = 208 participants) weight and height were assessed by researchers to compute body mass index and participants' weight concerns were assessed. As expected, results indicated that participants' weight concerns were associated with their weight status. Further, men and women …

  • A real-time assessment of interpersonal complementarity

    Open Access•Patrick M Markey, Patrick Markey et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2010

The principle of complementarity asserts that the interpersonal behaviors of interaction partners tend to complement each other by encouraging partners to act similarly in terms of warmth and opposite in terms of dominance. The current study applied Sadler's computer joystick tracking device (originally designed to assess personality perception) to examine complementarity. Sixty-six unacquainted females were videotaped during an unstructured dyad…
