Objective : Peer support is an essential component of adolescence and is instrumental in reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness. Yet, many youth and young adults experiencing a chronic medical condition conceal or minimize aspects of their conditions due to feared rejection. Disclosure practices in adolescents with chronic illnesses are not well-studied with little known about the nature of information disclosed. This study sought to bette…

  • Coping Motives Mediate the Association of Trauma History with Problematic Cannabis Use in Young Adult Medical Cannabis Patients and Non-Patient Cannabis Users

Whitney A Brammer, Bridgid Mariko Conn et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2022

Background: Despite evidence of the contribution of childhood trauma to the development of problematic cannabis use, its mediating pathways are largely unknown. Given the link between cannabis motives with trauma and problematic cannabis use, motives of use may represent a construct through which trauma impacts problematic cannabis use. Methods: A sample of 339 medical cannabis patient and non-patient young adult users from the Los Angeles area w…

Janna Ataiants, Ekaterina V Fedorova et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2021

Background Pain is a primary reason for medical cannabis use among young adults, however little is known about the patterns of pain in this group. This study identified pain profiles among young adult cannabis users and examined related antecedents and distal outcomes. Methods Past 30-day cannabis users aged 18–26, both medical cannabis patients and non-patients, were enrolled in Los Angeles in 2014–2015. A latent class analysis was used to identi…

  • Changes in Medical Cannabis Patient Status before and after Cannabis Legalization in California

Ekaterina V Fedorova, Janna Ataiants et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2021

It is unknown how patterns of cannabis and other drug use changed among young adult cannabis users as they became, exited or stayed medical cannabis patients (MCPs) after California legalized cannabis for adult use in 2016. A cohort of 18–26 year-old cannabis users was recruited in Los Angeles in 2014–15 (64.8% male; 44.1% Hispanic/Latinx). Based on wave 1 (pre-legalization) and wave 4 (post-legalization) MCP status, four transition groups emerge…

  • Critical Illness Research Involving Collection of Genomic Data

Open Access•Ellen Iverson, Aaron Celious et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Research on…•2013•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

Critical illness clinical trials that entail genomic data collection pose unique challenges. In this qualitative study, we found that surrogate decision makers (SDMs) for critically ill individuals, such as those who would be approached for study participation, appeared to have a limited grasp of genomic principles. We argue that low levels of genomic literacy should neither preclude nor be in conflict with the conduct of ethically rigorous clini…

  • Considerations in the Construction of an Instrument to Assess Attitudes Regarding Critical Illness Gene Variation Research

    Open Access•Bradley D Freeman, Carie R Kennedy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Research on…•2012•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 5

Clinical studies conducted in intensive care units are associated with logistical and ethical challenges. Diseases investigated are precipitous and life-threatening, care is highly technological, and patients are often incapacitated and decision-making is provided by surrogates. These investigations increasingly involve collection of genetic data. The manner in which the exigencies of critical illness impact attitudes regarding genetic data colle…

  • The Faith Community's Role in Refugee Resettlement in the United States

    J Eby, Ellen Iverson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2011•Citada por: 29•Referencias: 2

The United States is home to the largest resettled refugee population in the world, and continues to accept more resettled refugees for admission annually than all other resettlement countries combined. Refugees in the US are resettled through a public–private partnership model that leverages the support of private local community networks, particularly faith-based groups, with public support received from US government agencies. Faith-based orga…

  • In the Dark

    Open Access•Katrina Kubicek, William J Beyer et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2010

A growing body of research has investigated the effectiveness of abstinence-only sexual education. There remains a dearth of research on the relevant sexual health information available to young men who have sex with men (YMSM). Drawing on a mixed-methods study with 526 YMSM, this study explores how and where YMSM receive relevant information on sexual health/behavior. Findings indicate that information related to gay men’s sexuality is not readi…

  • The Healthy Young Men's Study

Wesley Ford, Wesley L Ford et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social…•2009•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 2

Recruiting a scientifically sound cohort of young men who have sex with men (YMSM) is an enduring research challenge. The few cohort studies that have been conducted to date on YMSM have relied on non-probability sampling methods to construct their cohorts. While these studies have provided valuable information about HIV risk behaviors among YMSM, their generalizability to broader YMSM populations is limited. In this paper the authors describe a v…

  • Strategies Used by Gay and Bisexual Young Men to Cope With Heterosexism

Bryce Mcdavitt, Ellen Iverson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social…•2008•Citada por: 20•Referencias: 6

Although the pervasiveness of heterosexism in the lives of gay and bisexual youth is well established, little is known about the strategies these youth use to cope with stigma and discrimination based on their sexual minority status. In this qualitative study, the authors present findings and implications for clinical practice based on interviews with 43 gay and bisexual young men. Respondents' coping strategies are discussed in relation to curre…

  • “Substance Abuse” Disorders among Runaway and Homeless Youth

    Michele D Kipke, Montgomery et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•1997
