Clustering of chronic non-communicable disease risk factors among selected Asian populations
BACKGROUND: The major chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) operate through a cluster of common risk factors, whose presence or absence determines not only the occurrence and severity of the disease, but also informs treatment approaches. Primary prevention based on mitigation of these common risk factors through population-based programmes is the most cost-effective approach to contain the emerging epidemic of chronic NCDs. OBJECTIVES: This s…
Self-reported use of tobacco products in nine rural INDEPTH Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems in Asia
BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is the most preventable cause of premature death and disability. Even though tobacco use is common in many Asian countries, reliable and comparable data on the burden imposed by tobacco use in this region are sparse, and surveillance systems to track trends are in their infancy. OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare the prevalence of tobacco use and its associated factors in nine selected rural sites in five Asian countries. ME…
Women’s Productive Role and Marital Violence in Bangladesh
Risk Factors of Violent Death in Rural Bangladesh, 1990–1999
This study attempts to improve our understanding of the prevalence and determinants of violent death in rural Bangladesh. Data came from a demographic surveillance system covering a population of nearly 62,000 in 10 districts of the country. Findings reveal that drowning and homicide were the leading causes of death followed by traffic accident and suicide. Significant sociodemographic differentials in violent death existed. The probability to be…
International migration and the change of women's position among the left‐behind in rural Bangladesh
While the impact of remittances upon the economic conditions of the sending communities has received much attention, the effects of international migration on women's position in society among the left‐behind have not been adequately explored. This paper examines the changes in the left‐behind women's position at the family level as a result of the migration of adult men overseas. Data came from a demographic surveillance system covering 70 villa…
Role of Education in Reducing Child Labour
This paper explores the hypothesis that the level of education of children and their parents plays a major role in reducing child labour. Data were generated from a sample survey of 3809 children aged 10–14 years living in 150 villages in two rural districts of Bangladesh. A significant inverse relationship was found between child labour and years of schooling. Age and education of children, parental education, land ownership of household and fat…
