  • Topics in the Haystack

    Open Access•Anton Thielmann, Arik Reuter et al.•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2024•Referencias: 1

Extracting and identifying latent topics in large text corpora have gained increasing importance in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Most models, whether probabilistic models similar to Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) or neural topic models, follow the same underlying approach of topic interpretability and topic extraction. We propose a method that incorporates a deeper understanding of both sentence and document themes, and goes beyond simpl…

  • Smoothing Parameter and Model Selection for General Smooth Models

Open Access•Simon N Wood, Natalya Pya et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•2016

This article discusses a general framework for smoothing parameter estimation for models with regular likelihoods constructed in terms of unknown smooth functions of covariates. Gaussian random effects and parametric terms may also be present. By construction the method is numerically stable and convergent, and enables smoothing parameter uncertainty to be quantified. The latter enables us to fix a well known problem with AIC for such models, the…
