Sociodemographic factors in the perception and understanding of weather warnings and the activation of emergency plans in the Canary Islands (Spain)
The effectiveness of weather warning systems is directly related to citizens’ understanding and response. This research analyses risk perception, level of understanding, and trust in weather warnings issued by Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and in the activation bulletins of civil protection emergency plans in the Canary Islands, through a structured survey of 902 respondents. Drawing on established research on warning effectiveness,…
Understanding Religious Tolerance
This study examines individuals’ religious tolerance (RT) using fuzzy hybrid TOPSIS and quantile regression applied to the WZB dataset. First, RT is measured using a thermometer scale, which is transformed into a semantic scale and synthesised into RT indicators for comparison. A quantile regression model is then used to assess the impact of socioeconomic factors on RT. The analysis covers eight nations – Germany, Cyprus, the USA, Lebanon, Palest…

A panoply of fuzzy set methods, including Fuzzy Hybrid TOPSIS, Fuzzy Clustering and Fuzzy Clustering ECO-Extended Apostle, are applied to a dataset of 10,156 respondents representing the USA. The latent varia…
Exploring the interplay between religion, tolerance, fundamentalism, and attitudes towards immigrants
Migration has profoundly impacted national political agendas and public perceptions of immigrants. Many factors, such as the perceived threat to the residents' economic stability and cultural integration, affect the attitudes toward immigrants. Academics have explored the influence of some socioeconomic and political factors, regional welfare programs, and support for right-wing parties in shaping these perceptions. The study reviews specifically…
Who supports EU sanctions against Russia’s war in Ukraine? The role of the defence of European values and other socioeconomic factors
Mapping Spanish Political Landscape on Migration
This study examines the electoral programmes of Spain’s four main national parties (PSOE, PP, VOX, and SUMAR) and Von der Leyen’s discourse after being re-elected as President of the European Commission regarding immigration, asylum seekers, and refugees. The key themes and disparities in the political discourses are found through text analysis, specifically tri-gram word clouds and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). Our findings reveal stark con…
Does gender equality in sports matter? examining the socio-economic impact on public perceptions
IntroductionGender equality (GE) is increasingly becoming a key point on modern political agendas. While governments and civil societies strive to achieve this goal, we may be far from "perfect" equality between women and men. Sport is a good example of some of the inequalities that men and women face, such as pay, discrimination, and unequal opportunities.MethodsThe study uses data from the Special Eurobarometer 525 (April-May 2022) to understan…
Fuzzy Hybrid Approach to Shatter Religious Tolerance and Fundamentalism Stereotypes across Diverse Nations
The study transcends borders to challenge conventional narratives about religious tolerance and fundamentalism. Leveraging a Fuzzy-Hybrid Approach, we delve into the multifaceted realities of eight diverse nations: Germany, Cyprus, the United States, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Turkey, and Kenya. Our innovative analysis unveils surprising complexities, shattering stereotypes and painting a nuanced picture of religious beliefs. Germany emerges as …
Religious Beliefs and Civil Rights
This study utilises data from the International Social Survey Program (ISSP), Religion module of 2018, to provide a comparative analysis between attitudes towards civil rights (ATCR) and religious beliefs (RB) in thirty-three countries, examining the influence of religion and socio-demographic factors on both latent variables. The study measures ATCR and RB for each respondent using the Fuzzy Hybrid TOPSIS method. Subsequently, Fuzzy Clustering A…
The Effects of Three Facets of National Identity and Other Socioeconomic Traits on Attitudes Towards Immigrants
The academic literature showed an increasing interest in studying the link between national identity and anti-immigrant sentiment. This work is based on ten countries from the International Social Survey Program (ISSP) dataset for two different waves: 2003 and 2013. The paper aims to analyse the influence of the three facets of national identity (nationalism, political patriotism, and cultural patriotism) and other socioeconomic traits on attitud…
A fuzzy-hybrid analysis of citizens’ perception toward immigrants in Europe
The public and political debate about immigration now play a big role in all European elections, and there is a trend increasing an anti-immigrant sentiment that receives important media attention. This work, based on the European Social Survey (ESS) round 9 data for 27 European countries, contributes to such debate by introducing a new method in the field, a Fuzzy-Hybrid Approach (FHA), that complements other methodological methods that have bee…
Attitudes towards Religions
Religious beliefs are a highly debated topic in the scientific literature. Various authors have approached this issue qualitatively and quantitatively. This study examines the attitudes towards out-religious groups, considering individuals' socioeconomic characteristics. A new approach is introduced, utilising the Fuzzy-Hybrid TOPSIS method applied to the WZB-Berlin Social Science Center database. Four items that measure the general attitude towa…
A DEA MCDM Approach Applied to ESS8 Dataset for Measuring Immigration and Refugees Citizens’ Openness
The current refugees’ crisis is undermining the main government coalitions of many countries in the European Union (EU), and tolerant attitudes and open admission policies toward immigrants seem to be part of the recent past history. The dilemma is gaining a lot of media attention as the public and political debate on migration is now playing an important role in all the European elections. Thus, the aim of this paper twofold.
