Socio-economic determinants for reduced uptake of routine childhood vaccination in Afghanistan
BACKGROUND: Coverage of many routine childhood vaccinations in Afghanistan is low and declining. For instance, only 60% of eligible children received doses of the pentavalent vaccine in 2013-18, and this fell to 51% in 2022/23. OBJECTIVE: To help explain the underlying causes behind this trend, this study aims to identify socio-demographic factors relating to caregivers whose children are either entirely unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated.…
Moving from features to functions
Contact with nature can contribute to health and wellbeing, but knowledge gaps persist regarding the environmental characteristics that promote these benefits. Understanding and maximising these benefits is particularly important in urban areas, where opportunities for such contact is limited. At the same time, we are facing climate and ecological crises which require policy and practice to support ecosystem functioning. Policies are increasingly…
Problematising characteristicness
Keyness is a commonly used method in corpus linguistics and is assumed to identify key items that are characteristic of 1 corpus when compared to another. This paper puts this assumption to the test by comparing case study corpora in the fields of genetic, immunological and psychiatric biomedical association studies, using what we refer to as a ‘K-FLUX’ analysis to produce a set of key items. Experts from within these fields are asked to evaluate…
A Domain Based Approach to Semantic Lexicon Expansion
Current approaches to the expansion of semantic lexicons for corpus annotation are somewhat ad hoc in nature and do not generally offer a systematic means of identifying areas for development within one’s lexicon. The present paper sets forward a domain based approach to semantic lexicon expansion, targeting UCREL’s Semantic Analysis System (USAS). First, an updated version of the lexicon is compared to representative corpora to ascertain areas o…
