  • The Biosphere Reserves Institute at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. Advancing science in, with and for Unesco Biosphere Reserves

Open Access•Ana Filipa Ferreira, Carsten Mann et al.•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2024

The new Biosphere Reserves Institute (BRI) at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) represents a pioneering effort to promote sustainable development and transformation. As an UNESCO Category 2 Institute, the BRI serves as an international think tank that advances science, technology and innovation in UNESCO Biosphere Reserves

  • Path Dependencies of (Un-)sustainable Land Use in Central Asia

Open Access•Martin Spies, Henryk Alff et al.•ARTICLE•Central Asian Affairs•2023•Referencias: 21

Across Central Asia, agricultural and agroforestry practices have been shaped by a high-modernist approach since about the 1950s, with the aim of overcoming ecological limitations. Negative repercussions of this approach still affect local developments, but a shift towards resource-conserving production systems faces constraints—many of which relate to so-called ‘path dependencies’, i.e. historically-evolved institutions constraining the current …

  • Spatiotemporal investigation of the interactive coercing relationship between urbanization and ecosystem services in arid northwestern China

Open Access•Lei Shi, Ümüt Halik et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2021

Rapid urbanization has negative effects on ecosystem structure, function, and balance, leading to the loss of ecosystem services (ES) and posing a threat to regional sustainable development. However, the complex interactive coercing relationship between urbanization and ES is not yet fully understood, especially in arid Northwestern China. In this study, we constructed an evaluative framework for urbanization and ES using land cover/land use data…

Open Access•Lisa Junghans, Sönke Kreft et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2018

  • Afforestation and Reforestation of Walnut Forests in Southern Kyrgyzstan

Open Access•Kara A Hardy, Niels Thevs et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2018

Kyrgyzstan is home to one of the largest areas of natural walnut forest in the world. These forests support significant genetic diversity of many important ancestral strains of fruit and nut tree species. The walnuts from those forests are a major source of cash income for many households in that region. Most of the walnut forests are overgrazed, which effectively hinders natural rejuvenation. This has resulted in overaged and degraded forests. C…

  • Participatory and Integrated Management of Biosphere Reserves

    Susanne Stoll-Kleemann, Martin Welp•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2008

This article investigates if the recommendations provided in the statutory documents of the UNESCO MAB (Man and Biosphere) Programme introducing the World Network of Biosphere Reserves to follow a participatory management approach are implemented in practice. We discuss the results of two different empirical data sets: First, in a global setting we show how and why conservation professionals and managers of biosphere reserves regard participation…

  • Mensch/Natur-Interaktion im Anthropozän Potenziale der sozial-ökologischen Systemanalyse

    Beate Ratter, Beate M W Ratter et al.•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2008

  • Human/Nature Interaction in the Anthropocene Potential of Social-Ecological Systems Analysis

Marion Glaser, Gesche Krause et al.•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2008

What are possible synergies between paradigms from the social and natural sciences? And between different strands of international research on social-ecological systems? The annual conference of the German Society for Human Ecology in Sommerhausen in May 2008 will look into these questions in detail
