  • Complexities of sustainable palm oil production by smallholders in sub‐Saharan Africa

    Open Access•L M Ayompe, Raymond N Nkongho et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 8

Sub‐Saharan Africa is increasingly viewed as an important area for oil palm cultivation and expansion. Palm oil is a commodity that can help developing countries like Cameroon attain their sustainable development goals (SDGs) targets through poverty alleviation (SDG 1) and by providing revenue to smallholder farmers to buy a variety of food thereby reducing hunger. However, due to the many negative environmental and social consequences, the secto…

  • How is organic farming performing agronomically and economically in sub-Saharan Africa

    Open Access•Christian Schader, Anja Heidenreich et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2021•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 16

The potential of organic agriculture and agroecological approaches for improving food security in Africa is a controversial topic in global discussions. While there is a number of meta-analyses on the environmental, agronomic and financial performance of organic farming, most of the underlying data stems from on-station field trials from temperate regions. Data from sub-Sahara Africa in particular, as well as detailed real-farm data is scarce. Ho…

  • Gendered analysis of the demand for poultry feed in Kenya

Open Access•John Njenga Macharia, John Macharia et al.•ARTICLE•Agrekon•2020

This paper uses a translog cost function approach to study the farm-level demand for poultry feed in Kenya. The study estimates the demand elasticities of the three common types of poultry feed; mixed feed, grain, and leafy vegetables. The estimated model was used to obtain estimates of Marshallian demand elasticities for poultry feed in Kenya for male-headed and female-headed households. The elasticities reported can be used by researchers and p…
