  • Inventory of glaciers and glacial lakes of the Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP – Pakistan)

Open Access•Antonella Senese, Davide Maragno et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2018

This study presents a map reporting valuable information on the cryosphere of the Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP, the largest protected area of Pakistan and the highest park in the world). All the information is provided considering the CKNP as a whole, and in detail by dividing it into five basins (i.e. Shigar, Hunza, Shyok, Upper Indus, and Gilgit). The glacier inventory reports 608 ice bodies covering 3680 km2 (∼35% of the CKNP area), w…

  • Geomorphology of Mount Ararat/Ağri Daği (Ağri Daği Milli Parki, Eastern Anatolia, Turkey)

Open Access•Roberto Sergio Azzoni, Andrea Zerboni et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2017

This paper presents a geomorphological map of Mount Ararat/Ağri Daği in Eastern Anatolia (Turkey). Mount Ararat/Ağri Daği is a volcanic complex covered by a unique ice cap in the Near East. The massif is the result of multiple volcanic phases, and present day landforms are the result of subsequent and overlapping glacial, periglacial, and slope processes. The geomorphological mapping of Mount Ararat/Ağri Daği was firstly performed on the basis of…

  • Recent structural evolution of Forni Glacier tongue (Ortles-Cevedale Group, Central Italian Alps)

Open Access•Roberto Sergio Azzoni, Davide Fugazza et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2017

Structural glaciology yields important details about the evolution of glacier dynamics in response to climate change. The maps provided here document the occurrence and evolution of brittle and ductile structures on the tongue of Forni Glacier, Ortles-Cevedale Group, Central Italian Alps, between 2003 and 2014. Through the remote sensing-based analysis of structures, we found evidence of brittle fractures such as crevasses, faults and ring faults…

  • Assessing glacier features supporting supraglacial trees

    Open Access•L C Vezzola, Guglielmina Diolaiuti et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Referencias: 4

The number of debris-covered glaciers featuring supraglacial trees is increasing worldwide as a response of high mountain environments to climate warming. Generally, their distribution on the glacier surface is not homogeneous, thus suggesting that some glacier parameters influence germination and growth of trees. In this study, we focused our attention on the widest Italian debris-covered glacier, the Miage Glacier (Mont Blanc massif). We analyz…

  • Alpine debris-covered glaciers as a habitat for plant life

    Open Access•Bruno E L Cerabolini, Marco Caccianiga et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 2

Debris-covered glaciers represent a significant, increasing fraction of glaciers and can host plant life on their surface. The goal of this work was to evaluate the suitability of supraglacial debris as a habitat for plant life and to discuss its ecological and biogeographic role. The research was carried out on the Miage Glacier (Mont Blanc massif, Western Alps, Italy). Vegetation cover was sampled using a regular sampling grid, recording plant …

  • Analysis of Glacial Meltwater in Bagrot Valley, Karakoram

Open Access•Christoph Mayer, Astrid Lambrecht et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2010

People in the Karakoram use discharge from glaciers during summer for irrigation and other purposes. While the glacial meltwater supply during hot and dry periods will vary as a result of climate change, Karakoram glaciers so far have not shown a consistent reaction to climatic change, although climate scenarios indicate severe future impacts in the high-elevation regions of the Himalaya and Karakoram. Field measurements on Hinarche Glacier in Ba…
