  • Modern pollen – vegetation – plant diversity relationships across large environmental gradients in northern Greece

    Open Access•Carolina Senn, W Tinner et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 13

Past vegetation and biodiversity dynamics, reconstructed using palaeoecological methods, can contribute to assessing the magnitude of the current biodiversity crisis and anticipating future risks and challenges. Among the different palaeoecological techniques, pollen analysis is probably the most widely used to reconstruct vegetation and plant diversity changes through time. Such reconstructions demand robust and comprehensive calibration studies…

  • Mountain aquatic Isoëtes populations reflect millennial-scale environmental changes in the Bohemian Forest Ecosystem, Central Europe

    Open Access•Alice Moravcová, Anna Tichá et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Referencias: 15

In this study we aim to investigate millennial-scale dynamics of Isoëtes, a type of macrophyte well adapted to oligotrophic and clear-water lakes. Despite its wide distribution during the Early Holocene, nowadays Isoëtes is considered as vulnerable or critically endangered in many Central European countries. Using a multi-proxy palaeoecological reconstruction involving Isoëtes micro- and megaspores, pollen, plant macrofossils, macro-charcoal, dia…

  • Humans take control of fire-driven diversity changes in Mediterranean Iberia’s vegetation during the mid–late Holocene

    Open Access•Simon Connor, Boris Vannière et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 39

Fire regime changes are considered a major threat to future biodiversity in the Mediterranean Basin. Such predictions remain uncertain, given that fire regime changes and their ecological impacts occur over timescales that are too long for direct observation. Here we analyse centennial- and millennial-scale shifts in fire regimes and compositional turnover to track the consequences of fire regime shifts on Mediterranean vegetation diversity. We e…

  • Climatic and human impacts on mountain vegetation at Lauenensee (Bernese Alps, Switzerland) during the last 14,000 years

    Open Access•Fabian Rey, Christoph Schwörer et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 14

Lake sediments from Lauenensee (1381 m a.s.l.), a small lake in the Bernese Alps, were analysed to reconstruct the vegetation and fire history. The chronology is based on 11 calibrated radiocarbon dates on terrestrial plant macrofossils suggesting a basal age of 14,200 cal. BP. Pollen and macrofossil data imply that treeline never reached the lake catchment during the Bølling–Allerød interstadial. Treeline north of the Alps was depressed by c. 30…

  • Detecting the provenance of Galápagos non-native pollen

Open Access•WO van der Knaap, Jacqueline FN van Leeuwen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 4

The influence of non-native pollen, both long-distance transported and from introduced taxa, on reconstruction of past vegetation is not often well quantified in palynological investigations. We examined both fossil and modern samples from the Galápagos Islands, a remote archipelago lying 1000 km from the nearest continent. These islands are particularly well-suited for such an assessment, as (1) the native flora is limited and well-known, enabli…
