  • Tracing storminess variability through seabed sediments in Puck Bay, southern Baltic Sea

    Open Access•Małgorzata Witak, Witold Cieślikiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2025•Referencias: 15

Storms have severe impacts on coastal communities and infrastructure. The southern Baltic Sea coast is particularly vulnerable to storm surges, as it predominantly features barrier-type coast, and extensive areas of coastal lowlands are situated within 1.5 m above sea level. Due to the short instrumental record, our knowledge of the complex issue of storminess is relatively limited. Therefore, it is very important to extend the timespan of storm …

  • Climate and sea level variability on a centennial time scale over the last 1500 years as inferred from the Coastal Peatland of Puck Lagoon (southern Baltic Sea)

    Open Access•Szymon Uścinowicz, Małgorzata Witak et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 4

The climate variability and related sea-level changes during the Holocene are still under discussion, especially in a regional context. Very little information comes from the southern and south-eastern Baltic coast. The aim of the paper is to gain insight on the history of regional environmental changes, particularly sea-level and storminess, and their driving forces. The investigations were located on a peatland on the coast of Puck Lagoon (Gulf…

  • Resilience, rapid transitions and regime shifts

    Open Access•Iván Hernández‐almeida, Iván Hernández-Almeida et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Referencias: 11

Rapid ecosystem transitions and adverse effects on ecosystem services as responses to combined climate and human impacts are of major concern. Yet few long-term (i.e. >60 years) quantitative observational time series exist, particularly for ecosystems that have a long history of human intervention. Here, we combine three major environmental pressures (land use, nutrients and erosion) with quantitative summer and winter climate reconstructions and…

  • Holocene North Atlantic surface circulation and climatic variability

    Open Access•Małgorzata Witak, Anna Wachnicka et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 8

Diatom analyses have been performed on a 425cm long Holocene marine sediment sequence from the North Atlantic south of Iceland and a 920cm sediment core spanning the last c. 7500 years from Skalafjord, Faeroe Islands. Additional core data include stable isotopes and results from magnetic susceptibility measurements, while chronostratigraphic control has been provided by AMS 14C measurements. The diatom records reveal distinct changes in North Atl…
