  • Jätteen laajentama luontokuva

    Open Access•Niina Uusitalo, Taru Lehtokunnas•ARTICLE•Media & viestintä•2025

Artikkelissa tutkimme eläinten, ihmisten ja jätteen keskinäisissä suhteissa rakentuvia toimijuuksia luontokuvassa. Tarkastelumme nojaa yhteiskuntatieteellisen jätetutkimuksen ajatukseen jätteen performatiivisuudesta sekä ymmärrykseen toimijuuden rakentumisesta tilanteisissa suhteissa. Luontokuvassa luonto on usein rakentunut ihmisen kulttuurista erilliseksi esteettiseksi tilaksi. Nykyään ihmisen tuottama jäte on kuitenkin levittäytynyt jo lähes k…

Open Access•Taru Lehtokunnas, Niina Uusitalo et al.•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2025•Referencias: 22

To keep track of the types and proportions of waste produced in society, various waste composition studies are carried out around the world. Through ethnographic fieldwork, this article examines how statistical knowledge about waste was produced in the context of a waste composition study organized by a Finnish waste management company. We follow a chain of actions involving sensory labor to show how waste was translated into numerical knowledge.…

On the one hand, we scrutinise waste as matter in a ruined state, subject to and r…

  • Coming off fossil fuels

    Open Access•Niina Uusitalo•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2022

As participants of the global capitalist system, we have rich and lifelong experiences of living with fossil fuels. However, these experiences are often implicit in our everyday lives, and rarely formulated explicitly. Coming off Fossil Fuels is a project that visualises and collects personal experiences of fossil fuel dependencies. Experiences can include memories, current attachments and future dreams connected to fossil fuels. This article is …

  • Aesthetic practices in the climate crisis

    Open Access•Jenni Niemelä-Nyrhinen, Niina Uusitalo•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Media Studies•2021•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 43

Previous research has shown that Western visual journalism has represented climate change through certain repetitive and stereotypical imagery mainly consisting of catastrophic images of climate change impacts, images depicting technological causes and solutions, and images of politicians and activists. This imagery has proven to be distant, abstract, and ineffective in motivating personal engagement with climate change. In this article, we claim…

  • Epistemic modes in news production

Open Access•Niina Uusitalo, Katja Valaskivi et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism•2021•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 15

In this article, we investigate the challenge of hybrid media events of terrorist violence for journalism and analyse how news organizations manage epistemic modes in such events. Epistemic modes refer to different ways of knowing, which are managed by newsrooms through journalistic and editorial practices. We draw from an empirical study of terrorism-related news production in the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle). Our data consist of thematic …

  • Unveiling unseen climate practices on Instagram

    Open Access•Niina Uusitalo•ARTICLE•Novos Olhares•2020

Climate change is often portrayed through stereotypical, extreme or controversial messages, with the role of human agency attached to consumption and demonstrations. Such depictions can be demotivating and cause issue fatigue. There is a need to broaden and elaborate our understanding of human connections to climate change. The aim of this paper is to identify a wide array of climate practices expressed by social media users. An empirical study o…

  • The Attention Apparatus

    Open Access•Niina Uusitalo, Katja Valaskivi•ARTICLE•Journalism Practice•2020•Referencias: 28

Acts of terrorist violence become repeatedly the focus of amplified attention in Western media. These acts spur hybrid media events where both news media and media users create and share information and interpretations of the event. Large news organizations play an integral role in attracting, steering and regulating attention in hybrid media events of terrorist violence. This article develops a theoretical conceptualization of the news organizat…

  • Talk to me! Possibilities of constructing children's voices in the domestic research context

Open Access•Elina Noppari, Niina Uusitalo et al.•ARTICLE•Childhood•2017•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 30

This self-reflective article explores the possibilities of producing children's 'voice' in the domestic research context. We look at producing voices as the process of giving an account of children's meaning making and life. We examine the methodological challenges of producing voices in the home environment from three perspectives: power, trust and ethics. The findings presented in the article are based on an ongoing longitudinal study of Finnis…
