  • Environmental history of a closed-basin lake in the US Great Plains

    Open Access•William O Hobbs, Sherilyn C Fritz et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

Sediment records from closed-basin lakes in the Northern Great Plains (NGP) of North America have contributed significantly to our understanding of regional paleoclimatology. A high-resolution (near decadal) fossil diatom record from Kettle Lake, ND, USA that spans the last 8500 cal. yr BP is interpreted in concert with percent abundance of aragonite in the sediment as an independent proxy of groundwater flow to the lake (and thus lake water leve…

  • A groundwater model to explain past lake levels at Parkers Prairie, Minnesota, USA

    Open Access•James E Almendinger•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1993•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

The response of a lake level to a shift in climate depends on characteristics of surficial and groundwater hydrology that are unique to that lake. Determination of the past levels of several lakes, rather than just one, can help provide a more precise determination of past hydrology and climate for a given region. The levels of several closed-basin lakes in the Parkers Prairie sandplain in west-central Minnesota were lowest about 7 ka. A steady-s…

  • Influence of Terrestrial Vegetation on Sediment-Forming Processes in Kettle Lakes of West-Central Minnesota

    Open Access•Heather Almquist-Jacobson, James E Almendinger et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1992

The composition, magnetic characteristics, and pollen content of sediments from two small kettle lakes near the prairie-forest border in west-central Minnesota were used to infer changes in terrestrial vegetation, shoreline erosion, eolian inputs, carbonate deposition, and aquatic productivity. Several important changes in sediment stratigraphy coincide closely with changes in the terrestrial pollen assemblage. Accumulation rates of organic, inor…
