  • Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks’ (Saon) Roadmap for Arctic Observing and Data Systems (Roads)

Open Access•Sarah Starkweather, Jan René Larsen et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2022

Arctic observing and data systems have been widely recognized as critical infrastructures to support decision making and understanding across sectors in the Arctic and globally. Yet due to broad and persistent issues related to coordination, deployment infrastructure and technology gaps, the Arctic remains among the most poorly observed regions on the planet from the standpoint of conventional observing systems. Sustaining Arctic Observing Networ…

  • Physical length scales of wind-blown snow redistribution and accumulation on relatively smooth Arctic first-year sea ice

Open Access•Woosok Moon, Vishnu Nandan et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Snow thickness measurements over relatively smooth Arctic first-year sea ice, obtained near Cambridge Bay in the Canadian Arctic (2014, 2016 and 2017) and near Elson Lagoon in the Alaskan Arctic (2003 and 2006), are analyzed to quantify physical length-scales and their relevant scaling behaviors. We use the multi-fractal temporally weighted detrended fluctuation analysis method to detect two major physical length-scales from the two independent s…

  • The North Pole Region as an Indicator of the Changing Arctic Ocean

Open Access•James Morison, Jeremy Wilkinson et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2018

Sustained observations of environmental conditions in the North Pole region are critical to understanding the changing Arctic Ocean. The Transpolar Drift conduit of sea ice and freshened upper-ocean waters across the Arctic Ocean passes over the North Pole region on its way to the North Atlantic through Fram and Nares Straits. The exported ice and freshened water stratifies the sub-Arctic seas and limits the vertical convection that ventilates th…

  • Winter-to-summer transition of Arctic sea ice breakup and floe size distribution in the Beaufort Sea

Open Access•Byongjun Hwang, Jeremy Wilkinson et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2017

Breakup of the near-continuous winter sea ice into discrete summer ice floes is an important transition that dictates the evolution and fate of the marginal ice zone (MIZ) of the Arctic Ocean. During the winter of 2014, more than 50 autonomous drifting buoys were deployed in four separate clusters on the sea ice in the Beaufort Sea, as part of the Office of Naval Research MIZ program. These systems measured the ocean-ice-atmosphere properties at …

  • Ice and ocean velocity in the Arctic marginal ice zone

    Open Access•Sylvia T Cole, John M Toole et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2017

The interplay between sea ice concentration, sea ice roughness, ocean stratification, and momentum transfer to the ice and ocean is subject to seasonal and decadal variations that are crucial to understanding the present and future air-ice-ocean system in the Arctic. In this study, continuous observations in the Canada Basin from March through December 2014 were used to investigate spatial differences and temporal changes in under-ice roughness a…

  • Robust wavebuoys for the marginal ice zone

    Open Access•Martin J Doble, M Doble et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2017

An array of novel directional wavebuoys was designed and deployed into the Beaufort Sea ice cover in March 2014, as part of the Office of Naval Research Marginal Ice Zone experiment. The buoys were designed to drift with the ice throughout the year and monitor the expected breakup and retreat of the ice cover, forced by waves travelling into the ice from open water. Buoys were deployed from fast-and-light air-supported ice camps, based out of Sac…

  • Oil spill response capabilities and technologies for ice-covered Arctic marine waters

    Open Access•Jeremy Wilkinson, CJ Beegle-Krause et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2017

Renewed political and commercial interest in the resources of the Arctic, the reduction in the extent and thickness of sea ice, and the recent failings that led to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, have prompted industry and its regulatory agencies, governments, local communities and NGOs to look at all aspects of Arctic oil spill countermeasures with fresh eyes. This paper provides an overview of present oil spill response capabilities and techno…

  • Scaling observations of surface waves in the Beaufort Sea

Open Access•Madison M Smith, Madison Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2016

The rapidly changing Arctic sea ice cover affects surface wave growth across all scales. Here, in situ measurements of waves, observed from freely-drifting buoys during the 2014 open water season, are interpreted using open water distances determined from satellite ice products and wind forcing time series measured in situ with the buoys. A significant portion of the wave observations were found to be limited by open water distance (fetch) when t…

    Open Access•David Kay, J Crowther et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2008•Citada por: 3

  • Complex North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) Index signal of historic North Atlantic storm-track changes

    Open Access•Alastair G Dawson, K Hickey et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 6

Previous reports have suggested a link between increased storminess in the North Atlantic during recent years with a period of time during which the North Atlantic Oscillation Index has been strongly positive. New analyses of late nineteenth-century gale-day data for meteorological stations in northern Scotland and western Ireland indicate that the relatively high storminess that characterized this period was associated with monthly NAO Index val…

  • Glandy Cross

Open Access•Trevor Kirk, George Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2000•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 20

Excavations at the Glandy Cross monumental complex during 1991 and 1992 formed part of an integrated programme of evaluation, rescue, and research by Dyfed Archaeological Trust (DAT). Enclosures, pit circles, standing stones, and cairns were excavated and their environs systematically surveyed. Radiocarbon dates show the monumental complex to have been constructed between c. 2190–1530 cal BC. However, the earliest activity at the site may date to…
