  • The Late Holocene History of Prairie, Brush-Prairie, and Jack Pine ( Pinus banksiana ) Forest on Outwash Plains, North-Central Minnesota, USA

    Open Access•John C Almendinger•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1992•Referencias: 4

Pollen diagrams from six sites on outwash plains of north-central Minnesota are interpreted as records of similar extralocal vegetation changes since c. 5000 BP. All of the study sites have undergone a shift from prairie to an aspen-oak community, followed by the jack pine-dominated vegetation that now occupies the sites. All of the species capable of directly invading prairie (aspen, bur oak, willow and some entomophilous shrubs) were probably e…

  • Pollen Diagram from the Nebraska Sandhills and the Age of the Dunes

    Open Access•H E Wright, John C Almendinger et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1985

Radiocarbon dates of organic alluvium beneath as much as 40 m of dune sand along the Dismal River have led to the suggestion that the Nebraska Sandhills date from the Holocene rather than the last glacial period. On the other hand, the basal layers of lake and marsh deposits in interdune depressions at three localities date in the range of 9000 to 12,000 yr B.P., implying a pre-Holocene age for the sand dunes. A pollen diagram for one of these si…
