A world safe for empires? A. J. Toynbee and the internationalization of self-determination in the East (1912–1922)
The article excavates the early international thought of the British historian and expert on international affairs Arnold J. Toynbee. It focuses on Toynbee’s shifting views on nationality, internationalism and imperialism during a decade of global war and conflict. Toynbee understood national questions as imperial problems requiring solutions and in the immediate aftermath of the Great War he was among the first to systematically reflect on the d…
An Age of Ages
In August 1902 the British Conservative MP for East London, William Evans-Gordon, spent two months in Eastern Europe surveying the living conditions of Jewish populations across the Russian Pale of Settlement. His reflections – and photographs – morphed into a booklet published the following year in London, entitled The Alien Immigrant . Abstracts from the manuscript were read in the commission hearings that led to the adoption of the Aliens Act …

The complex web of intellectual exchanges between Britain and Europe remains a peripheral concern for historians interested in the circulation of ideas across national, international and imperial frameworks. This special issue attempts to fill the lacuna by presenting new research on the triangular relationship between Britain, Europe and the idea of liberty during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Re-staging the ‘Eastern Question’
The article revisits the history of the ‘Eastern Question’ and its impact in late Victorian England through the lens of the British scholar Arthur J. Evans. Evans is best known for his archaeological discoveries in the island of Crete in the beginning of the twentieth century. His journalistic and archaeological ventures in the Balkans in the 1870s and 1880s have received scant attention. The article recovers Evans’ activities which straddled hum…
Internationalism between national questions and imperial considerations
The article recovers Henry Brailsford’s reflections on south-eastern and east-central Europe in a transformative period in international politics. Although the British journalist has been considered as key influence in the development of international relations in Britain, his commentary on the national questions in eastern Europe has remained relatively unexplored. The article argues that in response to the international politics of the Eastern …

Depicting the pain of others
Europe faces a refugee crisis of historic proportions. Greece has yet again become the principal site of an ever-unfolding humanitarian calamity. The refugee crisis has brought to the Aegean shores a motley crew of humanitarian activists, journalists, artists and photographers offering relief and documenting the plight of suffering populations fleeing war and destruction. Appeals, reports and photographs circulate across the globe on a daily basi…
Metapolitefsi
The conference on “Metapolitefsi: From the Transition to Democracy to the Economic Crisis”, organised by Historein in collaboration with the Free University of Berlin and held in Athens on 14–16 December 2012, sought to offer a first systematic account of the historical period from the fall of the Greek military dictatorship (1974) to the recent economic crisis. This postauthoritarian period in Greek politics and society is frequently referred to…
