A Meta‐Analytical Review of the Saying‐is‐Believing Phenomenon
The saying‐is‐believing (SIB) effect suggests that communicators’ messages align with the audience's attitude, leading to memory bias in subsequent recall. This meta‐analysis examines how variations in the audience's social identity and communication topics influence the strength and occurrence of the SIB effect. The meta‐analysis included 27 studies from 13 articles (1990–2021), yielding 55 effect sizes for message tuning and 59 for memory bias …
“It’s impossible for them to understand me ‘cause I haven’t said a word”
The baby boom generation's retirement will change the conceptualization of participation in old age due to their particularities from having experienced a specific socio-historical context. Likewise, the feminization of old age underscores the importance of developing research from the perspectives of gender and critical feminist gerontology. The objective of the present study is to identify and analyze women baby-boomers' conceptualizations abou…
Dialogic borders
We elaborate on the relationships between the notions of border, discourse, and culture. Vološinov and Bakhtin offer a theory of discursive practices that entails a conception of culture as dialogic transformation of both objective and subjective life through the folding and crossing of borders. Based on the theoretical elaborations of Vološinov and Bakhtin, we begin discussing classical and contemporary theories of culture, and end by discussing…
Normality and difference in education
Substantialist ethnographic approaches have been questioned for situating studies into stable groups and places, thereby creating rigid categories of diversity. In this study, we approached school normality through a relational ethnography, where the focus is on fields rather than places, and boundaries rather than bounded groups. Extended fieldwork was done at two schools in Santiago de Chile, where we embarked on a flexible journey to follow da…
The dialogical and political nature of emotions
A significant number of articles published in Theory & Psychology have been inspired by, or discuss, Vygotsky’s contribution to psychology. However, most of the available publications and discussions on Vygotsky overlook his theory of art and emotions and, more broadly, his view on subjectivity. In this article we offer a reading of Vygotsky’s The Psychology of Art. According to our interpretation, art is conceived in this theory as a social tech…
Campo e enunciado
Tiempo y memoria
This article offers a theoretical discussion of the importance of the problem of time in social research. Our aim is to contribute to the theory of the “entanglement” of socio-genetic and biographical processes by proposing a framework for understanding how speakers, through their narratives, articulate different biographical, social and historical time scales. Basing ourselves on a case study of an autobiographical discourse, we discuss the spec…
Autonomy and the ambiguity of biological rationalities
We present a theoretical review of notions of autonomy to show how they organize discourses within social sciences around the biological reality of ideal self-regulating individuals. First, we reconstruct key meanings of autonomy in biological theory, focusing on theories of autopoietic systems and their connections to constructivist epistemologies in the social sciences. Second, we discuss developmental and neuropsychological theories of self-re…
A dialogical conception of concepts
Classical psychology and philosophy have conceived of thinking as being intimately related to concepts. According to predominant psychological theories, concepts are the building blocks of propositional thought. Although important authors such as William James and Lev Vygotsky offered alternative accounts of concepts, they have been largely ignored. This is particularly surprising in the case of sociocultural theories, which have not elaborated f…
Discursively constituted experience, or experience as reply
The goal of the paper is to briefly sketch a theoretical proposal about the role played by discourse in the texture and texturing of lived experience. Inspired by the work of Bakhtin, we develop implications of concepts of inner speech, dialogicality, and specially outsideness, disputing the idea that phenomenological approaches are well equipped to account for human experience. The main argument is that so-called “immediate” experience is discur…
On the relation between social class and prejudice
Prejudice is more prevalent among members of the working class than among members of the middle or upper class. It is still a matter of discussion whether education works to suppress prejudice among upper class members or, on the contrary, to enhance genuinely tolerant attitudes. We propose that (i) two indicators of social class—income and education—independently predict prejudice toward multiple targets as follows: lower levels of income and ed…
The discursive nature of inner speech
If inner speech is first of all speech , then a critical departure point is to study its discursive nature. The aim of this paper is to deepen the notion of inner speech from a discursive and dialogical perspective. Drawing on the works of Vygotsky, Bakhtin, and Vološinov, we discuss the idea that consciousness is structured by language, exploring the concept of internalization, and making an analogy between acts of thinking and uttering. Inner d…
Discursive analysis of experience
We explore a dialogical conception of experience as experience of otherness, in order to suggest how to put together its socio-linguistic constitution and its phenomenologically non-reflexive nature. Through the analysis of a piece of conversation accounting for the flow of tension during verbal interaction, we argue that the felt and lived character of experience is attached to the positioning efforts among interlocutors within a discursive fiel…
The Role of Rhetoric in a Dialogical Approach to Thinking
The central idea of the paper is that human thinking consists in a movement through which a person socially interacts with herself. Consequently, thinking does not offer the experience of a private refuge in the intimacy of the individual thinker's self‐knowing, but a field where multiple points of view interact by contesting, distancing, approaching, agreeing or disagreeing, one to another. Classical ( Isocrates, 1929 /1968) and contemporary (Bi…
Continuing commentary
Collective memory implies the social and psychological production of meaningful acts of memory, a special kind of truth claim about a controversial past. Memory acts are thus conceptualized as ideological positioning movements toward others, which is impossible to account for from individual cognition. What kind of psychological processes, if any, would be involved in collective memory? A three-fold model is sketched to account for a whole act of…

We propose the Category-Focus IAT (CF-IAT) as an instrument to measure the implicit associations of single concepts. The CF-IAT directs respondents’ attention to a subset of the experimental materials. In a first study using the CF-IAT, Chilean adolescents (N = 49), members of either the indigenous minority (Mapuche) or the nonindigenous majority, completed CF-IATs assessing implicit attitudes toward these groups. Results revealed, in both groups…
Multi‐level analysis of cultural phenomena
Brain processes and social processes are not as separated as many of our Social Psychology and Neuroscience departments. This paper discusses the potential contribution of social neuroscience to the development of a multi‐level, dynamic, and context‐sensitive approach to prejudice. Specifically, the authors review research on event related potentials during social bias, stereotypes, and social attitudes measurements, showing that electrophysiolog…
Situational Flexibility of In-Group-Related Attitudes
An experiment was conducted to examine the situational flexibility of in-group-related attitudes at the implicit and explicit level. Seventy-one men and women with dual, Turkish-German, national identities were asked to think about positive aspects of either their German or their Turkish identity. Later, attitudes toward Germans and Turks were assessed using a single category implicit association test (SC-IAT) and self-report scales. Results show…
