A CityGML extension for 3D modeling of pedestrian mobility space
This paper presents a conceptual model of pedestrian mobility spaces in 3D city models. While conceptual models can be specified in various ways, we use standard elements of CityGML and an Application Domain Extension (ADE): The Pedestrian ADE extends CityGML 3.0 to incorporate key parameters related to the physical, legal, and regulatory aspects of pedestrian mobility environments. For this, the extension introduces new feature classes for verti…
LiDAR-derived high-resolution geomorphological analysis for archaeology
Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) derived from LiDAR surveys have become essential tools in predictive archaeological analysis. The increasing affordability and accessibility of high-resolution, large-coverage datasets have opened new avenues for archaeologists to detect a diverse array of sites. These datasets facilitate the examination of broad spatial distributions, functional relationships, and patterns of landscape use by past populations over…

Strategic allocation of landmarks to reduce uncertainty in indoor navigation
Indoor navigation systems often rely on verbal, turn-based route instructions. These can, at times, be ambiguous at complex decision points with multiple paths intersecting under angles that are not well distinguished by the turn grammar used. Landmarks can be included into turn instructions to reduce this ambiguity. Here, we propose an approach to optimize landmark allocation to improve the clarity of route instructions. This study assumes that …
Indoor view graph
This paper presents a graph model that simultaneously stores route and configurational information about indoor spaces. Existing indoor information models either capture route information to compute shortest paths and to generate route descriptions (i.e., answering how-to-get-to questions), or they store configurational information about objects and places and their spatial relationships to enable spatial querying and inference (i.e., answering w…

Spatial Causality
The growing interest in causal inference in recent years has led to new causal inference methodologies and their applications across disciplines and research domains. Yet, studies on spatial causal inference are still rare. Causal inference on spatial processes is faced with additional challenges, such as spatial dependency, spatial heterogeneity, and spatial effects. These challenges can lead to spurious results and subsequently, incorrect inter…
Map-Matching Error Identification in the Absence of Ground Truth
Map-matching of trajectory data has widespread applications in vehicle tracking, traffic flow analysis, route planning, and intelligent transportation systems. Map-matching algorithms snap a set of trajectory points observed by a satellite navigation system to the most likely route segments of a map. However, due to the unavoidable errors in the recorded trajectory points and the incomplete map data, map-matching algorithms may match points to in…
Space decomposition based on visible objects in an indoor environment
When a person moves, the set of objects in their visual range changes. Hence, the set of objects perceived from a specific range of locations may be considered as a signature (possibly non-unique) of this region and be used for the localization of this person. In the case of fixed objects, the number of regions with a set of specific visible objects is limited. A verbal description containing references to elements of this set of visible objects …

What can urban mobility data reveal about the spatial distribution of infection in a single city
Urban mobility data sets can be used to support models that capture spatial heterogeneity in the transmission of infectious diseases at a metropolitan scale. These data should be adjusted to account for relevant urban features, such as highly-connected hubs where the resident population is likely to experience a much lower force of infection that the transient population. In contrast to national and international scales, the relationship between …
