Strategic Occidentalism
This article introduces strategic Occidentalism as the labor of pursuing, translating, and calibrating Western-coded forms of value under contexts where their recognition is uneven and contingent. Drawing on longitudinal multi-sited ethnographic research, it examines how lower-resourced South Korean youth engage in English study and/or work abroad as a pathway to acquire such markers, including standardized test scores, accents, and credentials. …

This article examines the mobility patterns of migrant domestic workers in the United Arab Emirates. It identifies and explains the emergence of serial labor migration , which we define as the multi-country, itinerant labor migration patterns of temporary low-skilled migrant workers. This paper questions the currently lopsided relationship between the cosmopolitan and the parochial, in which the former is favored both conceptually and empirically. This article explores the emergence of precarious work within the hostess industry of Los Angeles Koreatown, an ethnic enclave cited as a hotbed of sex trafficking. Hostesses provide companionship, flirtation, and entertainment to male patrons in drinking settings.
