  • Are phonemes constructions

    Open Access•C Morin•ARTICLE•Constructions and Frames•2026

Construction Grammar proposes an integrative model of linguistic knowledge, but the status of phonology has long been a black box in the framework. In this article, I consider the question of whether phonemes are constructions. I argue that phonemes are entrenched and conventionalised units emergent from usage, that they are clearly form-function pairs, and that their sensitivity to meaning seems less sporadic than previously assumed. This leads …

  • Beyond mock politeness

Open Access•Efrat Levant, Einat Kuzai et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Politeness Research•2026•Referencias: 16

This paper examines the use of sarcastic interrogatives as a face-aggravating strategy and the contextual factors influencing their use. Through a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses of data from three distinct American English corpora, we present two key findings. First, sarcastic interrogatives function as a face-aggravating strategy by projecting a negative image of addressees through connotations, ad hoc ca…

  • Large corpora and large language models

    Open Access•C Morin, Matti Marttinen Larsson•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2025

Much linguistic research relies on annotated datasets of features extracted from text corpora, but the rapid quantitative growth of these corpora has created practical difficulties for linguists to manually clean and annotate large data samples. In this paper, we present a method that leverages large language models for assisting the linguist in grammatical annotation through prompt engineering, training, and evaluation. We apply this methodologi…

  • The YouTube corpus of Singapore English podcasts

    Open Access•Steven Coat, Carmelo Alessandro Basile et al.•ARTICLE•English World-Wide A Journal of…•2025•Referencias: 67

Recent advances in streaming protocols and automatic speech recognition (ASR) have enabled large-scale spoken language corpora, yet research on Singapore English remains constrained by small or text-based datasets. The YouTube Corpus of Singapore English Podcasts (YCSEP) addresses this gap with 620 hours of transcribed, diarized speech from over 1,300 podcast episodes by Singapore-based content creators. YCSEP supports the empirical analysis of p…

  • La gestion interculturelle des immigrants hautement qualifiés

    Open Access•Sijie Ren, C Morin•ARTICLE•Alterstice Revue internationale…•2024

Cette étude examine la gestion interculturelle (GI) des immigrants hautement qualifiés (IHQ) au sein des organisations, un sujet crucial en raison de l’augmentation significative des migrations depuis les années 1990 dans les pays occidentaux. L’objectif principal est de fournir une synthèse intégrée de l’état des connaissances actuelles sur les stratégies de GI concernant les IHQ et d’identifier les déterminants de ces stratégies. Pour ce faire,…

  • A social turn for Construction Grammar

Open Access•C Morin, Guillaume Desagulier et al.•ARTICLE•English Language and Linguistics•2024

Construction Grammar is an emerging theory of language, but the analysis of sociolinguistic variation is still relatively underdeveloped in the framework. In this article, we consider the representation of social meaning in Construction Grammar through a corpus-based analysis of double modals in British English on social media. We describe the use of double modals in a large corpus of geolocated Twitter posts, including presenting an inventory of…

  • Double modals beyond the Atlantic

    Open Access•Steven Coat, C Morin•ARTICLE•English Today•2024

This study investigates the use of double modals in Australian and New Zealand English using Twitter/X data. Double modals are rare grammatical constructions long believed to be limited to regional dialects in the Northern UK and the Southern US. Utilizing a geolocated corpus of over 80 million tweets, the study identifies 314 authentic double modal instances across 51 types, primarily occurring in informal tweets. Findings reveal widespread, alb…

  • Research is a duty for health professionals and in the best interest of patients in times of a pandemic

Open Access•T Haaser, Luca Ferretti et al.•ARTICLE•Ethics Medicine and Public Health•2023

  • Double modals in Australian and New Zealand English

    Open Access•C Morin, Steven Coat•ARTICLE•World Englishes•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 37

This paper reports the first large-scale corpus study of double modal usage in Australian and New Zealand Englishes, based on a multi-million-word corpus of geolocated automatic speech recognition transcripts from YouTube. Double modals are considered rare grammatical features of English, which have long been extremely difficult to observe in natural language due to low frequencies, non-standardness, and restriction to oral speech registers. In a…

  • From the particular to the universal

    Open Access•C Morin•ARTICLE•E-rea•2020

This article focuses on Robert Burns’s poetry, and argues that an inductive movement from the particular to the universal characterises a specific poetic paradigm developed by Burns that makes him a leading figure in British and European Romanticism, following Anne-Marie Thiesse’s account of late-eighteenth century aesthetics. Following an overview of Burns’s historical and philosophical context, the linguistic fields of morphophonology and Gusta…
